"As far as assigned readings for CORE go, I really enjoyed this book. Fun fact: The first paper I ever wrote in college was on this book, and it was the highest grade I got on a paper until the last paper I ever wrote."
"I was forced to read this book in my Humanities class. But immediately, I found that it is really good, with a unique literary style (vignettes) and a beautiful, artistic outlook and commentary on the mini-stories the author puts together."
"This is a short story collection that I love that nobody seems to have heard off. This Egyptian author won the nobel prize in 1988, I guess mostly for his Cairo Triogy which depicts arabique regular family life before anybody else wrote about it (or at least it was translated). This book Fountain and Tomb however is more recent and tells little stories of different families in a town and what their fates become based on the choices they make. That may sound pretty ordinary, but these stories are very dense and only 1-2 pages, but he somehow manages to get all the right details in there to paint a complete picture. It is like when somebody is really good at drawing they only need to put down a few lines for you to recognize the shape of what he is drawing."
