"Katherine, in the middle of her senior year in high school, finds herself strongly attracted to Michael, a friend's friend, after a party. As their relationship unfolds, the issue of sex comes up early on, more as an emotional and health issue than as a moral one. Both of them are aware that physical intimacy is both common and complicated. Michael has been sexually active, Katherine hasn't. Their relationship progresses slowly; they are accompanied on various meetings by her friend, Erica, a realist, who has known Katherine since 9th grade and believes that sex is a physical act and not a romantic act. They are also joined by Michael's friend, Artie, who, with Erica's help, explores and acknowledges some uncertainty about his own sexuality.
When they do, by mutual consent, have sex on Michael's sister's bedroom floor, they are sure it seals a love that will be "forever." However, separated for the summer by work that takes them to two different states, Katherine finds herself aware of the limitations of the relationship and ultimately attracted to a tennis instructor, Theo, who is older and more experienced in life. She takes responsibility for breaking the news to Michael when he comes on a surprise visit, the summer she knew was over, and Kath recognizes the loss as a stage in movement towards more complex, probably more satisfying relationships in the future."
"When I bought this book, I did not know that it was written in the '70s... until I was halfway and decided to look at the copyright info... and then it was all clear to me. This book was all about "firsts" and it really was a great telling of first serious relationship with someone. Reading the end of it was actually heartbreaking to me... for I always believed in the saying "first love never dies".. not that the author said otherwise. It's just that after closing the book I realized that she wrote the book probably just to illustrate that no matter how passionate and intense love can be, there is always that possibility that it won't be for forever... and that a simple and short time apart would change everything. It was something I did not want to even read about... much less happen to me. But it should be an eye opener to teenagers who are all too tangled up in "first love" that they tend to plan their future way too ahead all depending on their love's future plans. I really liked that this book also illustrated such string family ties that the parents are strongly illustrated as the "last say" in the teenager's life... I think that was the best part. :) I recommend this for parents to have their teenage kids read.:)"
"Argh. This is like sex ed from your hippie aunt. There are graphic sex scenes that are inappropriate for young teenagers and just so, so, so unsexy. Judy Blume wrote this book in response to her daughter's desire to read a book where two teenagers have sex "and nothing bad happens to them." I wouldn't say that nothing bad happens to Katherine and Michael, but this is definitely a book about how it's love and it's natural and only squares have a problem with their teenaged daughters bringing their dates back to the house to hook up (pardon the anachronism). This book is extremely dated (though my edition has a preface that tells you it's not enough to take the Pill alone and to protect yourself from HIV), and it reminds me of a review I once read of a Woody Allen movie. Allen, the review argued, is one of the last hippies, one of the few who still subscribe to the jejeune ideas about free love and open sexuality. Forever is certainly not a paean to free love, but it smacks of a certain 70's naivite that doesn't ring true anymore."
"Well then! No wonder I wasn't allowed to read this particular Blume book as a child (like 8 years old). It's actually pretty good for an older teenage girl to read. I would say that reading is a safe way to experience the emotionality of sex, and Blume is smart and places in consequences of making that decision in her story line. I'm not surprised that this is still relevant content, but I am surprised only a few things seem dated in this entire story, as it was written in 1975.
For story reasons only, I didn't like how it ended. I thought it was cheap, but I guess that's how you end a teenage romance. I'm sure I did that a couple few times myself.
I borrowed this from the library. I was a little surprised to see it in there, to be honest. My library is teeny-tiny, you'd think someone would have complained and it would have been culled long ago. Not so! So thanks, awesome librarians, for keeping such a frank and real book that every teenager can identify with on the shelves."
