About this title: A classic romantic comedy of errors told in alternating chapters by two fresh, funny new voices. Van Draanen is at her best here with a knockout cast of quirky characters and a hilarious series of misunderstandings and missed opportunities.

"Oh, my, this is a treat! Funny and wise; I laughed and cried.
I read it because we needed some more "wow" books for a fun summer reading list for middle schoolers at my library and I had in my notes that this was on a School Library Journal list of "Books That Got Away." I.e., worthy books that did not receive much award recognition in the year they were published. One of my library colleagues had read and loved it, too.
It is about two people who have lived across the street from each other since second grade. Juli has always wanted to spend more time with Bryce, but Bryce has always wished Juli would just leave him alone. Now they are in eighth grade...and everything is changing.
The chapters alternate their points of view. I agree with the SLJ reviewer that "The story says everything about boy-girl relationships that a tween knows in his or her heart but doesn't dare articulate. It also contains some of the most beautiful writing you'll find anywhere."
The book reminded me a little of STARGIRL, by Jerry Spinelli, but they are not really read-alikes. I agree with my library colleague that people who like Joan Bauer's books would probably also like FLIPPED.
I also think that any adult who has ever been 13, and/or who knows someone who is 13 now, would probably enjoy this book, too, not just us librarian types."
"I must say, Flipped is a great book and also has a great teaching, as well as being huge amount of fun to read because of the author's fabulous techniques. One of the techniques the author uses in the book is showing different perspectives throughout the book, to be speciefic: the way he describes the point of view from Juli's and Bryce's perspective, also a very fun technique since you're always wondering what the other character in the story thinks too. Another entertaining technique is the quite fancy way the author makes suspense in the story, like slowing down time, he shows the characters feelings and exposes his or her thoughts toward the event. One last thing that makes this book a must is that the author creates a tremendous amount of conflict building up all the time that makes a intense background for what's happening right then. The teaching of this book is a very good one, that "A painting is more than the sum of it's parts" which means that all the pieces that make up something are not what make something special, but what they make up is what's special."
"Flipped By Wendelin Van Draanen 212pp. New York, New York KNOPF Publisher ISBN 0-375-81174-5
Have you ever loved something for a very long time, but things in your life just don't go along with you? Are you the kind of person that holds on to something and does not let go no matter what? Well, this book would be a perfect match for you because the main character, Julianna does all of this, probably more, in the book Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen. Wendelin Van Draanen is also the writer of a mystery series called Sammy Keyes Series, but if you're searching for those mysteries book, Flipped wouldn't be a book you look forward to read. This book is a totally different thing. Ever wonder why the title is called Flipped? Well, the book totally does what the title says. This book is told from two points of views: the boy and the girl, Julianna and Bryce. It all begins when they were young, not toddlers, just young like 7 years old. But it didn't last long; it ended when they were 13. Trust me; they have a whole lot to learn about relationships and love. Toward the end of the book, Julianne learns that those amazingly perfect blue eyes are not the best reason to fall in love; and Bryce? He learns that cool people can live in houses with an ugly yard. So ever since Bryce moved in town, across the street from Julianna, Julianna has had a crush on him, well bigger than a crush. She was constantly stalking him, and trying to get as close to him as possible. But it all ended on 7th grade. Sadly, Bryce didn't feel the same toward Julianna. He could not stand a second with Julianna. But surprisingly, all that changed in 8th grade, for the first time, Bryce thought Julianna in a whole different way. You know how there's this quote about things change, people too, and there's always a reason for it. That's exactly how this book goes. Over time, Julianna and Bryce literally changes place. Julianna lost interest on Bryce and Bryce gained interest in Julianna. This book was spoken in a very sensitive tone. But most of all, it shows how no one can really change fate and what happens, happens, you can't mess with it."
"I liked this book. It was a quick, simple, easy read. It wasn't perfect, but I really liked it. The book is set up so that you read the entire story twice, from two different characters' perspectives. I loved that! I love books and movies that help me remember that my own personal view of the world is not all that exists. People can experience the same experiences and events so differently. It makes me more aware of the people around me and how the things happening impact them and their life.
Also, one of the main characters, Juli, is such a strong passionate sincere person. I love reading books with likeable REAL characters. But what I liked most was the getting inside of the characters' thoughts and reading as they processed their thoughts, feelings, and life experiences. Overall, it was a really good book."
