"okay...this one is like a 3.5 -- average. Not great, not bad.
Set in 2009, Sawyer takes as his premise that in the midst of ordinary life one day everyone on the planet loses consciousness for a few minutes and wakes up knowing his or her future in the year 2030. For some it is a good thing, but not for all. As scientists puzzle over what caused the flashforward (as the phenomenon came to be known), others are trying their best to deal with their futures that haven't yet occurred.
Sawyer offers his readers the opportunity to enter the debate over destiny vs. free will, having his characters enter into philosophical discourse as well as lectures on certain concepts of quantum physics, the nature of God, and reality.
There are really only two negatives about my experience with this book. First, the characters are a bit cardboardish and ultimately forgettable. I liked them as scientists but when they were in their own personal lives they were a bit flat. Second, the ending of the book (which I won't give away) didn't seem to fit for some reason.
Overall, the story itself was a good one, although at times it became a bit dense while trying to slog through the science. I think that people who enjoy more technical (hard) science fiction will really like this one. If you're not up on the discussion of Schrodinger's Cat, you may want to spend some time reading about it before you start this book. I spent a long time trying to figure it out, since I was not blessed with a brain that does science. Others who may be interested in the philosophy behind the story (free will vs. an immutable destiny) will also enjoy it. I can definitely recommend it."
"This is one of the most poorly-written books I've ever read. While an interesting basis for a sci-fi book, the execution is extremely sub-par. Sawyer writes like a fifth-grader who is telling his class about a summer trip to Disney World.
Much of the book takes place at CERN, a particle accelerator in Switzerland. Sawyer adds details about the location clearly included only to prove that he's been there, completely unnecessary details like where the fire extinguishers are located. I understand the need to include details in order to create a picture in the reader's mind, but much of the minutiae he includes is completely extraneous.
On the opposite end, the characters are shallow and underdeveloped. Many are there simply to create a structure on which to develop a plotline; we care little about where they're going or why. Ultimately they seems like a set of people who are all just wandering in different directions with no clear purpose.
Most annoyingly, the characters have a tendency to deliver long, very artificial diatribes that allow Sawyer to communicate his philosophies. Science fiction has a long history of comparing and contrasting science and theology, and when done properly it can be very thought-provoking. In this case, the practice was too in-your-face, too overt to be taken seriously. I did not for one minute believe that these characters would actually have conversations such as these.
The book was the basis for ABC's new television show of the same name. Seeing parallels between the events of the book and those on the TV show is interesting. The premise of the book itself is intriguing, but the flaws are too numerous make it worth struggling through."
"While watching the television show "Flashforward", I found out that it was based on a book and decided to check it out of the library. Though it was an interesting read, it was WAY too science-fiction for me. Taking physics helped me understand the book better, and although he does a good job describing things in laymans terms, I still felt the book would be over anyone's head who just wanted a fun book to read. I can see where the series took their information from, but it is also way too different to even compare the two of them. It was a decent read, but I am looking forward to the series more.
One thing I did like about the series is that Sawyer is Canadian, so he put in a lot of places and things that I was familiar with. While I enjoyed the book, I don't think I will be reading another of his for awhile."
"I picked this up while on a book-buying spree recently because I've been watching the FlashForward TV show that premiered recently. While the adaptation and the source material were bound to differ quite a bit (the biggest difference being the show's focus on FBI agents in L.A. rather than physicists at CERN), I found myself not enjoying the book as much as I might have had I not seen the show first. There's a lot of science in there, most of which goes straight over my head, and much of the immediacy we get on TV is lacking in the book, only because the flashforward visions written by Sawyer take place 21 years in the future, rather than a mere six months.
What I did like was the debate about the nature of the future: if you see a flash of your life months or years from now, is that the only possible future? Or can the future be changed, for better or worse?
One interesting note: the book was published in 1999 and set in 2009. Sawyer missed the mark with some of his predictions about the future (the continued widespread use of VCRs, for example), but got the name of the pope (Benedict XVI) right, among a few other small details. Trivial, but amusing nonetheless."
