"First They Killed My Father is a very emotional story. I heard that usually after a war there would be peace in exchange, but what's gone is forver lost. To be able to bring the family back to the past when it was filled with sweet and warm joyful fragrance. This 5 year old little girl whose life with her family have been taken away from her. Even though this is a truth that is a bit ironic, a bit sour. But it does happen in this happy society, people can relate using identification to stop all violence."
"This was one of those books which was tough to put down. The story of the treatment of Loung's family by the Khmer Rouge was unbelievable. It's amazing to believe that such atrocities existed in this world, only some 30 years ago.
Loung told the story in a straightforward way, with lots of details so you could envision exactly how the characters looked and how they were treated day to day. I'm looking forward to reading Loung's account of her time in the States, following her evacuation from Cambodia."
"I read this book while in Cambodia last month, but believe it's a must read for anyone who wants to understand the human spirit and struggle behind one family's determination to survive a genocide. Loung brilliantly retells her family's story during the Khmer Rouge as she experienced it as a child. She stays true to her 5-year-old voice, weaving in details about Cambodia life and culture, her time spent training as a child soldier and the horrors she witnessed first-hand. I felt like I knew her family members and genuinely cared about each of their fates."
"This book was really interesting the author immediatly drags you into the story by explaining life and how to live in a totally 3rd world country and grow up during the time of the Kymer Rouge. she really gave some crazy details that you coud just imagine in your mind. But the main reason i gave this really great true story a 4 was because sometimes i didnt know how or whether to believe a few things she stated. that is to no offense to the author and her life because it generally taught me alot about places and people that i honestly do not know much about.I can not even imagine losing anybosy in my family so her commitment and faith to be strong is something to be cherished and i believe all can learn from the book about the stupid everyday things we dread about."
