"Although written after the original Shannara trilogy, this book explains a great deal about the origins of Four Lands and history of the Shannara bloodline. Although the Sword of Shannara is a great book, I did not feel as though it was as clear about that history as I'd have liked. As such, this prequel was necessary and well written."
"Oh my goodness! I can't believe I got through this one!! Maybe I just chose a wrong Terry Brooks to start out with, but I'm not disposed toward reading anything else now. It was so insanely boring!! There were so many names, and they all sounded alike, and the plot seemed very loosely held together, and the ending made no sense at all to me. Ok, now for the positive. There were some really pretty metaphors..... No, that's not all. I thought, generally, that the beginning idea was pretty good. I thought that the main characters were likable, and many of the fight scenes were riveting. I think other Shanara books could be much better. If I'm to understand correctly, this was an offshoot of an original trilogy. I guess Mr. Brooks was just having a bad day."
"I really enjoyed this. Very similar to Lord of the rings but a much easier read. Am holding myself back not to get further hooked into this series or I'll never have time to read anything else."
