"This book is a doozy to read. Many think it is unreadable. I tried to read it many times and gave up after the first page. Then I found a book called "A Skeleton Key to 'Finegans Wake'" It is here in Goodreads. I did not put it in as one of my Read books is because I no longer have it and I am only listing books I have, in all categories. Now I do not agree with everything said in the Skeleton Key but it was that book which allowed me to understand Finegans Wake. Now I can read it. And it is marvelous. It is so darn good I want to scream it out but I know that I'll be looked at as a nut not only because I'm dreaming but because no one will believe me. So there you are. If anyone chooses to try the book and has a hard time ask me and I'll help you with it. A lot of the book includes Irish History and that I am no all that much up on but I can point you to where to look."
"I had not heard anything about this book before opening it. Ha ha! My reaction: "What the...?! What is this?" I flipped through the pages to make sure it didn't become comprehensible at some point. Nope. So, no, I did not read it and will not be reading it ... ever. Goodreads should have an option of "rejected" in the bookshelves tab.
I became quite interested in reading reviews and now am of the opinion it is a big literary joke, written to make fools of any who claimed/claim to understand it. Dream-conciousness and esoterica my foot. My bet is it's the calculated ramblings of a brilliant author who was so tired of all the pompous critics attempting to break open his previous works that he got the garbage-filled novel published (littered with random anagrams referencing the clever and even everyday to keep them hanging on) and had a great laugh at their expense. Or maybe that's just what I'd do."
"Call me a late bloomer to have read this book now. And stating that I "read" this book is somewhat of a misnomer. Any of you who have "read" or attempted to "read" this book will know what I mean. You have to admire the artistry involved in putting this work together. It did make me tired of alliteration. This is the kind of book that would be worthwhile as the subject of a seminar, guided by a Joyce scholar. Then it would be much more rewarding. Parenthetically, if you do an Internet search on the word "voax", the word does appear in this book. When I worked eons ago at the Maricopa County Library Center, someone asked me what the origin of the Sun Lakes street name "Voax" was. No clear answer was ever found. It would be wonderful to imagine that its origin was from "Finnegan's Wake". And I also know, in regard to my seminar remark, that I could read scholarly works about FW on my own. But it isn't the same. Plus I want a life outside of Joyce in terms of reading."
"I have read in and around this novel since I was an undergraduate but only read from beginning to end one time (is there really an end?). This is certainly a text that demands vaste knowledge of history, literature, etc. and other than Joyce, I'm not sure is anyone is capable of really understanding FW. The tendency is to drift from the primary text into all those erudite skeleton keys and annotation tomes, and as much as I dislike them, at some point you have to get some help in deciphering the text.
I can see that a dedicated reader could limit his library to just this one book and have a very demanding, yet fulfilling life of reading and literature."
