About this title: Ali Khan and Nino Kipiani live in the oil-rich capital of Azerbaijan at the beginning of World War I. Despite their religious and cultural differences they have loved each other since childhood, but their own tolerence does not protect them from others.

"1/09 This story, presented as a love story, is really a history of Baku in the Georgian area near Persia during World War I. It is a story of western European culture colliding with Asian Muslim culture and the conflicts created by two different ideologies. It is a story about love, honor, tradition, when to fight, and when to wait. An interesting description of a people and a period of history."
""It is the eve of WWI in Baku, Azerbeidshan, a city poised precariously between east and west. Ali, a Muslim boy from a proud, aristocratic family, has fallen in love with the beautiful Nino, a Christian girl with distinctly European sensibilities." Here are two young people living in the same city of Baku with such different cultural values, beliefs, and wealth. This story envelopes well the cultural aspects of each city these two encounter in their lives because of the war. A reader does get a sense of grit and violence of the time and era."
"This was a great book. It was assigned for my Russian Imperial History class and I didn't exactly read it then. but I am glad that I have read this book now.
It was an interesting book that follows the lives and love of Ali khan and Nino K (can't remember the rest of her last name). Ali is a muslem azerbaijani who is from an almost royal family in Azerbaijan. Nino is a georgian, greek orthodox christrian who also grew up in Azerbaijan. They fall in love and the story is their journey in both Azerbijan , then to Persia (Iran) and back to Azerbaijan. All the while, world war I and the russian revolution is happening.
I was most intrigued by the section on their life in Persia and how different it was between Azerbaijan. Both are muslin countries but in Azerbaijan, the women did not need to wear veils or stay in the harem. Ali bought Nino everything she could want but nino still was not happy. Ali realizes this and decides that her happiness is more important than him being in Persia. For a 20 year old boy in turn of the 20th century world that must have been hard and a challenge to buck tradition and family and friends because you do love your wife and don't think of her as just an object and a thing -- as women are described from the rest of the muslim characters in the book.
It was a good book, a little hard to get through at times, but it was a good and interesting book."
"a touching story taking place in azerbajan in 1935 about a romance between an orthodox christian woman and a muslim man. the book was first published in 1937 under a fictitious name--it only came out 30 years later that it was co-written by a woman and man, yes, an orthodox christian and a muslim. we are reading it in preparation for our trip in 2010 to the five 'stans--it is a wonderful source of sociological, political and religious background."
