About this title: This book, chronicled from the perspective of a fanatical ten-year-old soccer fan, through disillusioned adolescence, to an adult "who should know better", examines the absurdities, idiosyncrasies and traumas of everyday life and football. While Chelsea were undoubtedly the football team at the heart of fashionable London in the late 1960s, it proved to be the quiet backstreets around Highbury and Finsbury Park which led a sombre schoolboy from Maidenhead into a 20-year obsession with football, and Arsenal FC in particular. Nick Hornby became hooked after seeing Arsenal beat Stoke City (1-0 ...

"I've been meaning to read Fever Pitch for years, ever since I saw the movie based on it (the British one with Colin Firth, not the American remake), but last week fairclough and I went to see The Damned United and I decided that I absolutely needed to read it right away. Strangely enough considering that sentence, I couldn't care less about football... but I am fascinated by the football fans. It was really fun to be reading about Hornby's outlook on fandom and find endless parallels with my kind of fandom (tv shows, movies, books.)
From all the things I've heard from other people about Fever Pitch, it seems to be one of those books you either love or hate. And the line doesn't seem to be drawn between those who love football and those who've never seen a game, or those who love Hornby's novels and those who've never read any of them. But I am solidly in the "love" category, and have already started reading another of his books (Juliet, Naked.)"
"I am not a football fan, and had to skip over many of Hornby's descriptions of so-and-so using this foot to score the second goal in that game which was part of that one season. But the fact that Hornby felt compelled to include these details, and that he had them stored away in his brain, is part of the story.
Fever Pitch does an excellent job of describing what it means for Hornby to be an obsessed fan. He does not take the long view, he is not detached, and his analysis comes in bits and chunks between descriptions of particular plays. He's a gifted writer, but he's also obsessed with football. Seriously. Obsessed.
So if we as readers can take the long view, and be detached, then we are able to piece together the story of Hornby's development from a 12-year old whose parents are divorcing to a thirty-something who would rather miss a friend's wedding than miss a home game. It's a fascinating story, but we have to be willing to enter the crazy with him a bit, and go along for the ride.
I didn't learn anything about football, but I learned a lot about fandom and obsession."
"Fever Pitch is laugh out loud funny. I found myself laughing aloud in my living room, on the train, waiting for public transportation. It is a story not only about soccer (football, sorry), but about fandom, passion, and the relationships that go with it.
Nick Hornby details his relationship to the English football team Arsenal F.C. and yes, it's helpful if you know a little about the sport, otherwise you'd be a bit lost. However, his obsession with the team and sport is applicable to other obsessions as well; if you (or anyone you know) has ever been a fan of something and moods have been affected, then you will know perfectly well what he means. Arsenal is really a part of Hornby's life, becoming almost a character, and he details how he has to plan his social life around attending games, how his highs and lows correspond to the team's, etc.
I had had a great quote picked out that applied to universal obsessions, but somehow the dogear became undone. I guess I'll have to re-read the book sometime."
"This is a cute memoir specifically dealing with Hornby's lifelong utter obsession with his favorite football (soccer) team Arsenal. Each short chapter's title is actually the date plus the final score of the match from that day, framing whatever else happened to be going on in his life (his dad remarrying and moving to France, his first girlfriend, his frightening experience of being in a crushing football crowd that was similar to one that ended up killing 38 football fans later that year, etc). I picked this up after going to my first MLS game (go Sounders FC!), and found it a nice intro to the football fan mentality."
