About this title: Why is it that the relationships we care about most - those with our intimate partners - often seem doomed to fail? Why do we feel compelled to punish those closest to us who love and appreciate our real qualities? In "Fear of Intimacy", the authors bring almost 40 years of clinical experience to bear in challenging the usual ways of thinking about couples and families. They argue that relationships fail not for the commonly cited reasons, but because psychological defences formed in childhood act as a barrier to closeness in adulthood. A wide range of cross-generational case studies and ...

"In reading this book, I came to understand how defensiveness becomes solidified, how the patterns of one's past can persist and interfere with the building of true connectedness with another person. Whether you might find Firestone's methods to build intimacy useful, he clearly explains how and why relationships become routinized, spontaneity disappears, and there is a loss of interest in one another. Just the recognition of one's stumbling blocks is useful in moving forward, no matter which method you might embrace to change them."
"This book is definately interesting, but given his preface I am curious about his methods... It seems to come from a very psychoanalytic point of view. There do seem to be some valid conclusions, yet I am not convinced (yet) that they are universally applicable. I need to do more research on the book, the author, and his research."
"I would recommend everyone read this book. Everyone, I don't care if you're already in a relationship and don't think you are afraid of closeness. I think men mostly get blamed for a fear of committment and fear of intimacy but women and men are guilty of it. We choose our partners based on our hopes and fears. We hope they will fix us but fear they will leave us or smother us. Reading Fear of Intimacy helps one see how they themselves are ruining relationships based upon their fears. We sabatoge ourselves when we get close to another whether in friendships or significant relationships. We have too high of expectations on others while we blatantly ignore what it is we're doing to mess up. We expect our relationships to fulfill us and last forever and when they don't maybe we blame ourselves or the other person not getting to the heart of what happened. Fear of intimacy explains the process and a little bit about how to fix it. Basically you need to be emotionally mature which means fulfilling yourself first so you don't get butthurt at the slightest infraction. Learn that love is allowing yourself to do what makes you happy while allowing another to do what makes them happy and that is what builds the closeness we all crave."
