""The Favoured Child" is the second book in the Wildacre Trilogy. This trilogy follows the lives of three generations of a well to do family. Unfortunately I was not able to get my hands on the first book, "Wildacre", to read before "The Favoured Child". Despite that fact, I thoroughly enjoyed the story. I do feel that having the background knowledge of what happened in this family the generation before would have been interesting but it is not necessary to follow the story.
This story follows the life of the main character, Julia, from girlhood to womanhood as she learns to act as a landlord on her family estate and slowly learns about some dark family secrets. Julia discovers at a fairly young age that she has a special power called "the sight" which she inherited from her Aunt Beatrice, the main character from the prequel.
This book would be enjoyable for anyone who likes to read historical fiction and doesn't mind a hint of the supernatural. It is at times a disturbing read but will hook you from beginning to end. After reading this book I am all the more determined to find "Wildacre" and "Meridon", the other two books in the trilogy."
"Much better than Wideacre- This second book of the trilogy leaves out the perverse sexual relations(for the most part) that most readers had big issues with in the first book. There is a villian, as always, and many of your favorite characters from the first book make appearances! I have already started the third book, Meridon, and am looking forward to it being as entertaining as this one."
"This is the second book in the Wideacre sereis. Julia Lacey want sto be the next squire of Wideacre but her cousin Richard, is bound to become the squire. she makes friends in the town of Wideacre and eventually marries Richard. Her mother, best friend, uncle, stable hand and a boy named Mathew Merry are all killed by her brother, she thinks he is insane. She becomes pregnant and must stay his wife. This book was ok but it was kind of slow. I liked the ending best but I did not like her brother Richard. She mentions that Julia looks like her aunt Beatrice Lacey way to much. I think it could have been shorter and more concise!"
"Philippa Gregory really knows how to write a good story. While I was initially drawn to her work because of her historically fiction novels, I wasn't sure if I would like this one. However, she brings the same imagery and page-turner quality to this one as she does with all her other novels. I would enjoy reading more by her. It was also a treat to go to Bath and see all the places that she mentions in her book!"
