"If you have young children - - you will enjoy this picture / story book about England's FATHER CHRISTMAS who tastefully swears at Winter, sits on the pot, feeds his animals and even gets presents from his relatives. A regular guy it seems. It's a delight. My copy is so dog-eared that I'll probably have to buy another copy!"
"An absolute must read book to show you what Santa or Father Christmas gets up to on Christmas Day from his early morning cup of tea and listening to the radio, to delivering presents to all sorts of houses, including igloos and Buckingham Palace. He then returns home to eat his Christmas Dinner, open a few dire presents from relatives, peruse his holiday brochures then head to bead with a cocoa. He is a slightly grumpy Father Christmas but you can tone down the Happy Blooming Christmas (thats as bad as it gets !) comments for very young children. Christmas wouldnt be Christmas without this !"
"When I was a kid, this book was the best...I wonder what happened to my copy? It's a portrayal of Santa as a regular middle class guy living in a farmhouse in the English countryside. We follow him on Christmas Eve as he tries to take care of all the little things that need doing. So he's feeding the reindeer, making sure there's enough toilet paper, singing christmas carols in the shower, making tea for himself, loading up the sleigh, checking his list, etc. All the while he uses the word "blooming" as an expletive -- as in "blooming wind chill factor!" At the end of the night he settles down to a nice glass of scotch and opens presents from his relatives, who give him socks, I believe. This book is charmingly mundane and so totally English. I love it!"
"I read this to the boys tonight. Fascinating. This is the sort of book Samuel will sit down with and look over very carefully, analyzing all the details and digesting the story through the illustrations. This is one to read year after year to grow to appreciate Father Christmas' cranky demeanor. Although, I am going to have to ask the boys a few questions to see how they perceived Santa's numerous beverages throughout."
