About this title: The first of a five-novel series called "Chronicles du plateau Mont-Royal", about the inhabitants of a working-class street in Montreal. The story begins in May 1942, and traces the characters living on the street, from the ex-courtesan Ti-Lou to the gluttonous couple who eat continually.

"I found the first part of the book difficult to understand because Michel Tremblay does not use paragraphs or quotations marks in his writing. After I used a piece of paper to write down all of the characters and which families they belonged to, I enjoy reading the book. Michel Tremblay is a play-write and I would love to see the book produced as a play. The story takes place in one day on a street in Montreal and gives a snap shot of the people and their thinking of the time."
"Really good; different. You get perspectives of all the different pregnant women on the street and see their tough lives and struggles. Even the local cat and the family of ghosts is given some narrative space. From old to young, happy to miserable, male and female, all of life's realities and hardships come through.
It never did answer why those ghosts are there, though..."
"Ach, I enjoyed the first twenty or thirty pages - very much - but I couldn't finish it. There's no breathing space here... even in dialogue. The formatting became so exhausting as I tried to differentiate between voices, and all of the voices sounded the same. I gave up. I might be sorry that I gave up, but I just wasn't up for it."
