About this title: In this second Philip Marlowe novel, the detective is more fleshed-out and well-drawn. Chandler expanded Marlowe's trademark irreverence and wise-guy remakrs, and in "Farewell, My Lovely" Marlowe is more well-intentioned. Taking on the case of Moose Malloy, wrongly imprisoned for robbery, Marlowe must also find Malloy's love Velma, who disappeared when Malloy was imprisoned eight years before. Also Marlowe must come to terms with his feelings for Anne Riordan, who is assisting him with the case.

"The main story was this: Moose Malloy was looking for the girl he loved, Velma. In the penultimate chapter he found her. But things didn't go well at the reunion. In between? Oh there was a fake psychic. Dirty cops. A crooked shrink. And a few murders being done.
If you were not a fan of those type of stories, this book is worth a try because it had these lines:
The voice of the hot dog merchant split the dusk like an axe.
I like smooth shiny girls, hardboiled and loaded with sin.
I thought his pearl was a little too large, but that might have been jealousy.
I used my knee on his face. It hurt my knee. He didn't tell me whether it hurt his face.
The eighty-five cent dinner tasted like a discarded mail bag and was served to me by a waiter who looked as if he would slug me for a quarter, cut my throat for six bits, and bury me at sea in a barrel of concrete for a dollar and a half, plus sales tax.
Would you like to know more? Give a hoot. Read the book."
"Aw well, hell," I said. "A guy never gets to do anything in this country any more. Always women."
"She likes you," Randall said, like a polite FBI man in a movie, a little sad, but very manly. "Her old man was as straight a cop as ever lost a job. She had no business taking those things. She likes you."
"She's a nice girl. Not my type."
"You don't like them nice?" He had another cigarette going. The smoke was being fanned away from his face by his hand.
"I like smooth shiny girls, hardboiled and loaded with sin."
"They take you to the cleaners," Randall said indifferently.
"Sure. Where else have I ever been? What do you call this session?""
"Chandler might be one of the classic detective writers, but his style and stories aren't quite what I like in a mystery. The private detective (Philip Marlowe) is supposed to be one of these tough loner types, but I prefer the unassuming or unexpected type of sleuth. Of course, one easily sees how Chandler's Marlowe has been copied by many crime writers, so it makes it worthwhile to have read some of this stuff."
"I'm still partial to The Long Goodbye, but Elliot Gould does a mean narration for the Chandler audiobooks. It's been a lot of mystery and noir for me lately, with the last few months seeing me breeze through this, The Big Sleep, three novels by James Cain (Double Indemnity, The Postman Always Rings Twice, and Mildred Pierce), and the one that predates them all: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. I'll be knocking out a couple Hammett novels soon and the next Holmes book which all will be nice and cozy as we settle in for Fall in Portland."
