"This was a fun book. It had a great beginning hook with lots of rising intensity and action to hold a reader's attention. There were some POV switches in the middle of chapters, which made me have to go back and reread some pages, but over all a fun romp. Clasic Dahl. BFG is still my favorite, but this was up there too.
Pretty sure an editor today would censor some things out of this book though. The part where Mr. Fox's little son drinks some cider ale would never fly in today's middle grade novels.
Will be interesting to see what they do with the movie as Mr. Fox doesn't necessarily have a huge character arc, and it's more that likely the screenwriter will put one in."
"this is a book that holds a hugely large part of my heart. not only is a hugely fun book with a hero of questionable morals but it happens to be the first book i ever read without the help of my parents.
the story is quite simple it is one of survival, its a story of doing whatever it takes for your family. i woould not like to meet the person who reads this and doesn't in some way feel for the foxs and there plight. there struggle for survival and how their common enemy brings them together and helps them build a new community.
fablous but like all roald dahl books it can be quiet dark and sinister. with hero that you love to hate, heros with questionable morals that you just can't help falling in love with over and over agin.
A book i hold in very high esteem and having recently re-read it i have come to appreciate t and even fell in love with it all over again."
"Even though I rated the BFG as amazing, this is actually my all-time-favourite Dahl-book. The fable element, the fact that Dahl didn't shy away from something as graphic as a shooting and a bleeding tail stump, the foul humans and the beautiful insult to good manners that is Rat all make a lovely brew of a story. Even though it's slightly misogynistic in that all the women seem to be fairly useless (the animal females), or fat grumpy trouts (the human females), I will always read this one again and grin my head off."
"I reckon most people are aware that Wes Anderson is making/has made a stop-motion film based on this short children's novel. As a long-time fan of both Roald Dahl and Wes Anderson, the book had been on my radar screen for a while, but it took a couple strips in Kochalka's American Elf to finally get me to take a look. Since it's such a short work, I decided to read it online (scribd.com).
That's not an ideal set-up, (especially since I was interrupted several times) but the story is charming, and while Quentin Blake's illustrations are probably more effective on the page than the screen, they're still pretty great on-screen.
This is as good a book by Dahl as I've read, in the same league as The Witches, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and The BFG. Mr. Fox is a surprisingly compelling hero, as thinly sketched as he is (it's kind of a neat trick actually, the main reason we like Mr. Fox is because of how much he likes and is liked by Mrs. Fox and Badger), and the three farmers are memorable villains.
