About this title: Famine is conquerable, but in some countries in Africa human suffering seems to be getting more rather than less common. This study argues that humanitarian relief work is a certain kind of political action, and that technical solutions must be evaluated within a political context.

"This is one of the best books to give background on different conflicts in African countries and the effect of the ICC and international involvement has in the region"
"Rather good. Goes over some well-traveled ground regarding the flaws in international development, especially in the fact that aid organizations are not accountable to the recipients of aid, and blows away several sacred cows (Live Aid, etc). I was put off a bit by the aggressiveness of some of de Waal's writing and would have appreciated more footnotes to support his arguments, but it's a nice corrective to the brochures of aid agencies, in particular it the outright attacks on high-profile agencies like MSF."
"Really interesting take on the way conceptions of state responsibility from the colonial era have affected current food policy in Sub-Saharan Africa."
