"The book Fallen Angels is about a boy named Perry and he goes to vietnam to fight the Viet Congs in the vietnam war. This book takes place in vietnam. Perry is the main character in the story. He suffers a lot in the war. The external conflict in the book is him having to deal with the Congs. He keeps on having gun battles with them and he is afraid one day he's going to get shot by the Viet Congs. One of his main internal conflicts is Perry is missing his home and he wants to see his mother and brother in Harlem, Manhattan, New York.
During this book I made a text-to-self connection. When Perry joins the army and goes to Vietnam, reminds me of my father joining the serbo-croation army. My dad had to join it when he finished high school. For two years in the army my dad suffered a lot. He had to shoot guns, train, and guard the military base from attackers. After two years my dad finally came home to his house.
II would give this book five stars because there was a lot of plot and action the characters were incredible and it really grabbed you in the book. The book had some really sad times with the death of some of Perry's comrades. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves Walter Dean Myers books and to anyone who loves action."
""Fallen Angels" is a great war story written by Walter Dean Myers. This book surprised me the most out of all of Myer's books becuase I didn't know Myers had it in him to write such a in depth and interesting war story. I think the reason why Myers wrote such an unbelievable war story is because his brother died in Vietnam so he has experience with it. Myers does a great job of illistrauting all the fear and horror invovled in war and the army and how people can be forever traumatized by it. The book is mainly about the life of Richie Perry in the army during vietnam and how he discovered first hand that war is not what it's made out to be. Perry's main goal at the beginning of recruitment is to try to make a new life out of the army but in the end he is just lucky to survive and join his family back home. The fear Myers illistrautes is in to these young soilders is unparallel and you can feel their constant worry of the enemy slitting their throats in the darkness or an ambush in the middle of the jungle. The main theme of this book is that war is a terrible place and that many people are torn apart because of it. Take Richie Perry for example, he never thought in his wildest dreams that his friends would be killed right in front of him. This book is mainly a 1st person narrative with a lot of dialoge and a lot of focus on setting. Like all of Walter D. Myers novels, each and every characters has his own spark and livelyness. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in joining the army because it will definately give you second thoughts.War is not fun and the sooner the message is spread, the less death there is."
"This novel presents a young soldier's experiences from basic training to his return from Viet Nam because he has been badly wounded. It presents every horrible experience you've ever heard of happening to kid soldiers in Viet Nam short of capture and torture and prison, and I think that's probably the biggest problem in the novel. I haven't checked with anyone who actually fought on the ground, but I think he's telescoped a bit too much--the portrait is too extreme for ALL of that to have happened to one kid. It does give a VERY realistic picture of the worst of that war--and the worst is pretty bad. The language and some sex talk make the novel one for only the most mature teens. It is "politically correct"--America's pretty much the bad guy here, though Viet Cong excesses and nastiness is portrayed frankly, too. Characterization is very good: well rounded, realistic, with good and bad officers and soldiers, but mostly mixed good and bad. The black experience in the Viet Nam war is a good one for our kids to read, since it gives a perspective they rarely get. The book is well worth reading despite language and vulgarisms, but only for the mature: the action and violence is explicit and gory. You may want to read it yourself before you give it out. This book is especially good for US Studies classes studying America at war."
"My son selected this book for his high school summer reading project. He enjoyed the book and I had no problem getting him to complete the reading. He would recommend the book as an enjoyable read."
