"EXCELLENT book! If you want to read about the time period of Berlin's fall, this is a must-read. I could not put the book down. Then I had about 100 pages left, and I could not open it up again for a couple of weeks. The actual fall of Berlin was horrific, and it was difficult to read about the battles, the damage, the battles, the damage...
I highly recommend this book to those interested in reading about the history of Berlin. It's very well-written and very interesting."
"I have to say, this is equally as well done to me as his Stalingrad book. Vivid horrible imagery, and a seemingly minute to minute account of what was happening during the siege.
I am looking forward to his D-Day book coming out this fall, it will be interesting to have read them all in a row. Anyways, highly recommended tale of pretty much how europe got to be shaped like modern day europe, although i think the first world war really defined that."
"Beevor is one of the Second World War's eminent historians. I have heard that he can be partisan at times, but I found none of that in this book. The Fall of Berlin was the cataclysmic end of Hitler's Third Reich. Over three million men (and some women) took part in this final battle, as Hitler desperately ordered German units, which typically existed on paper only, against enormous Russian forces approaching from the east. In addition to detailing the movements and engagements of the combatants, Beevor presents the activities of Hitler's minions during the last days of the Reich as they fear Hitler's retribution in the Führerbunker and the horrifying suffering of the soldiers and civilians in destroyed Berlin after the fighting ended. The Soviet soldiers were not released from danger after the German surrender, as a paranoid Stalin sent as many as 1.5 million of his own men to Russian labor camps for the crime of getting captured by the Germans during the fighting or commenting upon the better lifestyle of middle class Germans."
"Too mean to buy Beevor's latest book that covers the D-Day landings I opted to get Berlin from Hackney library to read while on a week's holiday in France. While it's a master-class in itself on how to research and present big historical subject matter it's also a fairly harrowing read."
