About this title: Senator and one-time presidential candidate John McCain devotes roughly one-third of this multi-generational family biography to his grandfather and father, both of whom had distinguished military careers in the Pacific. McCain describes his youth and his own military career, which included serving in the Vietnam war, where he was shot down and held as a prisoner of war, experiencing years of torture and deprivation. He also discusses the values and ideals instilled in him by his family. The memoir closes after McCain's release and return home in 1973.

"The first couple of chapters about John McCain's father and grandfather should have been more interesting but I was not fond of either person from the descriptions their son/grandson gave of them as hell-raisers, although very successful, honorable men. His own story got better, even though he seemed to have a similar character when he was young. His description of the 5.5 years he spent in Vietnam as a POW were wrenching at times. I loved the humor he and his fellow POW's found in their awful situation. He seemed to grow up during this time. I especially admired the code of honor and ethics, which he learned from his father and grandfather."
"It was unfortunate that I chose to listen to this after listening to Obama's book Dreams of my Father for McCain suffered in comparison. Both audio books were read by their authors and Obama is a better reader.
I am fascinated by stories of POWs and know that I need to expand my reading and understanding of the Vietnam War. How incredible hard it would have been to be in the position of John McCain's father. Admiral McCain was leader of the Pacific Fleet and responsible for all troops and military actions in Vietnam while his own son was a POW of the enemy. Balancing the needs, desires and feeling of commander and father would have not been easy."
"Faith of My Fathers is a memoir of Arizona senator and 2008 Republican presidential candidate John McCain. In this inspirational book, we learn about his childhood, his years in high school and at the Naval Academy, and the five years he spent as a prisoner of war after his plane was shot down over North Vietnam in 1967. We also learn about his father and grandfather, both of whom served in the US Navy in World War II. I have read many political and military memoirs, and this one is definitely my favorite. While most of the book is serious, there are numerous instances of humor. This moving book is an authentic testament to American patriotism, courage, sacrifice, and honor. Highly recommended."
"While I found the book interesting, I skipped over a lot of the military details. The parts I found most interesting was when McCain was a prisoner of war, but even there he went on and on, mentioning numerous other POWs that he admired "the most" or who were his most trusted friend. I guess there is a reason that McCain became a politician, not a writer. McCain is undoubtedly courageous and tenacious. The book did, however, bring to mind The Great Santini and the family, military "tradition", though without the abuse."
