Description: 1st printing, hardcover, dust jacket; both the book & jacket are in like new condition, likely never read. The popular book by Albom that tells the story of the Michigan team of five amazingly talented freshman basketball players. Photos. A very nice copy. read more
"Albom at his finest. Unlike the sappy goop of Morrie or 5 People You Meet, Fab Five is so good in capturing sport and sport's larger themes: camaraderie, ego, and drama."
"This is one of my all time favorite books. I just can't give it 5 stars, though, because of everything that's happened since then. Major NCAA violations came out of all this, and Mitch Albom turned out to be a journalist of suspect integrity. I can't tell you what this book did to me the first time I read it, and how much I still read it. It's just bittersweet now."
"For some time, I thought that the more recent revelations about Chris Webber and the Fab Five at Michigan and all the rules that were broken in bringing that team together completely diminished what they were able to accomplish. But when I look back, I think that while the university and the program ultimately paid a hefty and fair price, what those kids did on the basketball floor as freshmen was and continues to be one of the greatest feats in the history of the NCAA Tournament.
What is eye-opening throughout the book is the way that Albom is able to get into the inner workings of the whole recruiting process for collegiate basketball. He is given unprecedented access into the lives of future stars and uses that to find out exactly what made them all tick, what motivated them and what drove them to excellence.
In the end, it doesn't matter very much that the team ended up as a footnote in the history of the game. Mitch Albom's book stands as a portrait of a unique moment in time, something that we will never see again.
Mitch Albom is a very cool, informative and insightful writer. I hesitate to overuse the word "great" since I think most writers are pretty great, but Albom is versatile and intelligent. No wonder he's become much more of a household name."
