"WOW! I love this book. I would give it 10 stars if Goodreads allotted it.
Exodus is about the Jewish plight out of Cyprus to Palestine and building upon the holy land. More specifically it is about survival in German concentration camps, the evacuation of 300 children from a Cyprus on a container ship - Exodus, and what happened to the Jews once they landed in Palestine. It's about how the British botched protection, how the Arabs hated the Jews and sought revenge at ALL cost, and how the Jews never forgot their faith nor deviated from it.
Leon Uris did a fantastic job and telling a story all-the-while staying true to facts of actual occurrences. The story clipped along and not only could I not place the book down, but I couldn't sleep at night. I fell in love with the characters and I developed a thirst for the Jewish history, their faith, and their devotion to the holy land.
This book should be required reading for "high school" not a book you read in college or later in life."
"I dreamed about Ari Ben Canaan (once my husband was his actor) after reading this. The struggles of the Jewish people, starting with the Holocaust, were brought to a reality for me. Their suffering gave them the courage and fortitude to fight for their land. The characters are strong, their ideals leading them down a road that only continued their struggle, but ultimately laid a foundation for their children's children to establish Israel.
I was immersed in the setting of "Exodus". Palestine, Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean became places of romance, beauty, danger, conflict and triumph. Ari is a true hero, to the point of being too strong. His love, Kitty, is the weakest piece of this story, but she is strong in her own way. Their love story is not the greatest in history. Their struggles amidst WW2 are amazing to read."
"This is a great book and I think everyone should read it. It explains a great deal about the people of the countries that America (and other countries) are at war with now. Leon Uris did a lot of research for this, and other books, and he is a great writer that sticks to the facts.."
"Fascinating look at the formation of the modern state of Israel, with a great deal of fact mixed in with the fiction. It was hard to tell who was real and who was not, since other than the really famous names (Ben Gurion, etc.) I don't know a lot about the history. The "story" was interesting and fast-paced (I read the entire 570+ pages in less than a week) but the writing style leaves something to be desired. Some of the characters (Kitty and Ari in particular) were rather one-dimensional, and I didn't really understand why they fell in love. However, the stories of the children of the Holocaust and the sabras' roles in the literal reclamation of the land of Israel were very engrossing. I was annoyed by some of the deaths - too obvious - but that's the way it was (and still is) over there. Overall, very good. I look forward to getting another view of the Arabs in The Haj."
