About this title: George Orwell's celebrated and always timely 1948 vision of a world subsumed in tyranny and war describes the process of events by which Winston Smith, a London clerk at the Ministry of Truth, comes to understand the true nature and aims of the government he works for, and portrays his doomed attempt to create a private life for himself and his lover, Julia. One of the bleakest political novels ever written, 1984 illustrates Orwell's despair that democracy could ever summon the strength to overcome totalitarianism in his lifetime.

"I know this book is supposed to be deep and meaningful...but I found it to be dull and depressing. It didn't leave me with the desire to fix the world, only the wish that I hadn't wasted a day reading this thing.
The pages where the protagonist is reading the book on society were horrid; seemingly endless pages of it. Yes, the wondering who was on which side was interesting, Yes, Orwell had some interesting ideas, No, neither of these made up for the dull bits. The good bits were very very good, but the bad bits were horrid."
"Like many of you, I read Orwell many years ago. But sadly, through the years some of my books have been lost. I now make periodic attempts to find replacement copies of those books I loved the most. Orwell's 1984 is both captivating and greatly depressing. I remember after reading it I chose to look on the brighter side and to assume, like so many others, that humanity would self-correct and a grim Orwellian future would be avoided. Authors often exaggerate for effect, and allowing for that, Orwell's fundamental predictions largely came true. It took longer than Orwell predicted, but the excesses of George W. Bush and his cadre of sycophants brought the worst of Orwells prophecies into our lives."
"This is one of my favorite books ever published. It truly is a must read book.I still remember reading this book as a young boy and being amazed by the idealism. My perspective of the world honestly changed after reading this iconic book."
