"Ethnography through Thick and Thin" updates and advances that critique for the late 1990s. Marcus presents a series of penetrating and provocative essays on the ...

"More thoughts on ethnography and anthropology as a field of knowledge ... without reading the whole book this time around and focusing on one chapter, I remembered what I did not like about this book. It is too abstract and all over the place. A chapter on ethnography, wealth and the rich, was based on ethnographic data on the Kaluli? What is the focus of the work on the Kaluli that sheds light on wealth and globalization? It's not clear. The overall theme of the book, or the thickness and thinness of ethnographic description in the Geertzian vein almost seems like a plain point not necessarily warranting an entire book. I might be missing something here."
