"This is the third time I've read this book. Ideas related to Jewish Mysticism are complex and have many layers of meaning. This book is an introduction to some of these ideas. Each time I read it I experience a bit more clarity, but always there is mystery and not knowing."
"This is a very good introduction to Kabbalah, managing to convey both how complex and in-depth it is, as well as some of the bigger concepts like the ten sefirot and Ein Sof. Matt's excerpts and translations of various Kabbalistic texts are excellent and broad ranging, and the notes about each excerpt at the end are very useful.
There's no doubt that Matt's book is very simply introductory and just scratches the surface. Nonetheless, Essential Kabbalah definitely grabbed my interest enough to make me want to look more into Jewish mysticism."
"This book has served as an introduction to kabbalah for me, and it has certainly piqued my interest in that regard. I was surprised at how many concepts resonated deeply with me.
This is a collection of excerpts from major kabbalistic texts (for example the zohar) and from the works of many of the most influential kabbalistic writers, rabbis.
One complaint is that is would have been nice to have explained the difference between the tree of life presented in the book and the tree of life that seems more popular (with 3 paths leading to malkhut, not one). This detail bothers me.
This clearly is written as an introduction and general review of kabbalistic thought, and at the very least it did the job of filling me with the desire to read and learn more.
Of all the religious, spiritual texts I have read, this one seems to come close to the one that has influenced me most deeply: The Tao Te Ching."
