"This was a book I read in school, possibly grade five. It was the first thing I had read about WWII, and I still cannot hear the name Warsaw without thinking of this book (word association/memory?). I liked reading as a child, so reading assigned books in school was like a bonus on top of reading my own books, so this book has all good memories for me. I was amazed at the children living in the ruined cellars and making their way from Poland to Swizerland to find their parents. Bravery and sibling comradery-under-great-hardship was a theme that stuck out for me."
"I read this book when I was in grade school when i was about ten yrs old in the mid 70s. The publish date of 1987 is wrong. Anyway, great book for young people. It was one of the first novels I had read."
"Amazing story, based on true events, about a children's journey from war-torn Warsaw to their parents in Switzerland. Their honest hope and determination and selfless love for each other is encouraging and refreshing. The good people they meet along the way that willingly and selflessly help them build your faith in human nature amid the horror and hate of the war that surrounds the people. The style of writing and nature of the language makes the book approachable for older elementary age children without overwhelming their emotions with the horrors and gruesomeness of the war. You can talk to your kids about the topics mentioned (concentration/prison camps, life in a leveled city, the scarcity of food, separation of families and the hope that keeps them alive, allies, the occupation, why Switzerland, etc.), and help them prepare for future books on WWII that are more emotionally demanding. They'll know you're there to help them understand. A positive, hopeful book on the love and determination of a family."
