Easily Near Fine in an about Near Fine example of the scarce dust jacket. Jacket is exceptional for this title, the best we have seen, with no fading whatsoever, just a touch of fray at the crown and a small sticker shadow on the front flap. Leonard's third book and third Western.

Fine in fine dustwrapper with a little rubbing on the front panel, and two tiny tears barely worthy of mention. The third of the author's three Houghton Mifflin hardcover westerns, from early in Leonard's career. He has gone on to become one of the most successful mystery novelists working today, and several of his works have been adapted to film. Only a small number of hardcover copies of this edition were printed, and most of them went to libraries (when copies surface on the market they usually have replaced endpapers and remnants of library markings). A superior copy of a notable rarity, avidly sought by both western and mystery collectors. See this book in 3D on our site.

Faint ring stain on the front board, light foxing to the top page edges, else book is bright and clean. Jacket is chipped at the heel, with some associated shallow creasing, and several tiny closed tears at the extremities. A very presentable copy of what is, in our experience, perhaps the author's rarest title, much more difficult than the already-scarce American edition published by Houghton Mifflin. Leonard's third novel, a Western, the only copy we have ever seen.
Description:The uncorrected proof copy of the third of his Westerns, which...The uncorrected proof copy of the third of his Westerns, which preceded his first mystery by over a decade and his first bestseller by over two decades. Rare: we have never seen another proof copy of any of Leonard's Westerns offered for sale, and Houghton Mifflin was not even routinely doing bound proofs for all its titles at that time. There were probably only a couple of dozen of these produced and, given the format and fragility of this item, it's unlikely that many others have survived, if any. 7" x 11" ringbound galley sheets, printed on rectos only. The label affixed to the cardstock cover gives a publication date of 1955 (the book was actually published in 1956) and, in pencil "May 1." Also in pencil on the front cover label is written "The Westerners"--an alternate title, or an indication of the genre, for marketing purposes? The covers show some extremely slight creasing; still a remarkably fine copy, with the covers crisp, the fragile plastic ring spine intact. Housed in a custom quarter leather clamshell case.
