"I loved reading this book in the summer, in between the peach trees and buzzing honey bees that is the Camp Stevens Organic Garden. It was everything I could have asked for to be able to turn the pages while dripping peach flesh slithered down my chin, and I would NOT recommend reading this if you can't get your hands on an in-season, local, sun-warmed, peach.
"As someone who'd like to homestead one day, or live with my family on a very small farm, this book was NOT one to aid my anticipation or pique my excitement. The writing is lyrical, sure--I'll even give it "Walden-esque," as one book cover blurb emotes. However, the author does his best job in making farming-for-profit, organic farming, and family farming appear stressful, unprofitable, and rife with drudgery. And don't even get me started about the immigrant labor he uses--seriously, dude, learn Spanish. But yeah, I really do want to taste one of those Sun Crest peaches right about now."
"Some really beautiful stuff about farming, the struggle to survive as a farmer, and the natural world. This definitely isn't a fast moving book, but there are some beautiful passages in here.
I liked the details about his Japanese American history, his farm family and I had an incredible craving for peaches the whole time I was reading this book."
