"After reading the Lansing book, I thought I would not enjoy this as much, except for the excellent photos taken by expedition photographer Frank Hurley. However, I found that Alexander was able to glean more from the participants through their diaries than Lansing was either willing or able to do. She did a better job of revealing their character and flaws. I now understand one of the possible reasons why Shackleton's wife commanded that his body be returned to South Georgia Island to be buried rather than to England; he had a long-standing mistress in London, and actually spent very little time with his wife while there. Similarly, I think I also understand why Shackleton and his cohorts lived for eventual return to the polar regions, even when they did not have a clear plan. Like soldiers and survivors of war, they were probably addicted to their particular form of adventure.
For an even more expansive view of their adventure, take a trip with Google Earth and look at the places they travelled through. South Georgia Island, with its contemporary Panoromio photos is particularly illuminating. It is hard to believe that Shackleton and company could have spent 36 hours on the snowfields and glaciers between King Haakon Bay and the Stromness whaling station without any shelter. The Panoromio photos of the whaling stations are also revealing for the record of industrial devastation they portray. These places were giant meat rendering plants, built with little regard for the environmental damage they were doing. Of course, that was 1915, and this was whaling."
"Remarkable true story or courage bordering on delusion. Remarkable photography taken from 8x10 glass plates in double digit sub-zero conditions, some of which was buried under ice for months at a time before the photographer retrieved the film to resurrect should he ever make it home. Simply an amazing book and an amazing true story, expertly told"
"I'm not a big fan of historical books, but had to read this for work (don't ask). It was well written, though the subject matter wasn't of great interest to me. The pictures were interesting, though I didn't like the hunting pictures much. I will probably try to finish this book sometime, but am not in the mindset to do it right now."
"This was an excellent book. It was a little slow at first though. It was absolutely fascinating how they managed to survive for two years in the frozen antarctic. I did find it sad how Shackleton died so young and how so many of the crewmembers perished in WWI or did not live very fruitful lives. It was also sad how no one paid attention to the survivors because of WWI. The pictures in the book are fantastic too."
