"I thought that this book was great. I came to it after watching the Neil Jorden film (and of course visualised Sarah as Julianne Moore..mmm), and was in some ways put out because, even though the plots are fundamentally the same, many things are changed (for instance Bendrix being a Spanish Republican and writing about the Spanish Civil War), as well as the ending. All in all though, this is a good novel, with many issues raised, such as love, religion, athiesm and sin. A Diary of Hate is how Bendrix describes his book, and he is a bit of a selfish man when all is said and done so Sarah blames herself for a lot of his problems with the affair. She is the victim in all of this however; a bored housewife seeking fulfilment elsewhere, but then ends up in love with Bendrix and finally sacrifices herself for his life (if we can believe the supernatural element here), just to give him his happiness and not hers. Her love and compassion would allow her to do this. I really felt for her character, but also had some sympathy for Bendrix too, because even though it is clear he hated Sarah, it was because of his love for her and the fact that all they had was an affair which would never be anything more substantia and so,after she dies, he is more screwed up than when she was seeing him. Sad book on most levels, but contains some element of hope (if that be in the form of religion, one cannot say)"
"This is very good. The quality of the writing is excellent, the story interesting and the character of Sarah well developed. Somehow I felt like I knew her intimately by the end of the novel, but not the men, not really. I did care about all three people caught up in the unique sort of friendly but sad love triangle. I myself would have loved poor Henry, he seemed so sweet and lovable. Maurice, the lover of Sarah just wasn't my type. He seemed so angry and selfish and jealous that it was hard to like him. I identified with poor doomed Sarah quite alot, but I suspect most anyone would on some level-she was so very human. A beautiful book I might actually read again"

From the very onset, Greene's narrator Maurice Bendrix reflects on the end of an affair. In an introspective narrative questioning motives, jealousies, actions, and loyalties, Bendrix explores the quality of his relationship with Sarah Miles. While this is a story about infidelity, the word fails to give justice to the sentiment. The End of the Affair transcends any hint of derivative simplicity to searchingly question the nature of faith, the purpose of life, and the depth of pain.
I was introduced to Greene when my husband asked me to read this book. I think he was moved by the characters. I think he felt their humanness and hoped for their redemption. I did the same. We rarely appreciate the same books, but in this case we are of one heart and one mind. Greene is a master. The End of the Affair succeeds in every way with a kind of perfect, raw storytelling that I have never before seen.
Awed by this novel alone, I will read every book that Graham Greene has ever written."
"Graham Greene is truly a great author, in my opinion. He clearly stands in the male position, yet speaks only for himself. Those who agree or disagree are left to do so in light of Greene's affirmations. He probably was not as clear with himself as he was with his characters, which allows the reader to identify with him even more.
I enjoy his perspective and suspect others will as well. But not all others."
