About this title: It is November 25, 1960, and the bodies of three beautiful, convent-educated sisters have been found near their wrecked Jeep at the bottom of a 150-foot cliff on the north coast of the Dominican Republic. El Caribe, the official newspaper, reports their deaths as an accident. It does not mention that a fourth sister lives. Nor does it explain that the sisters were among the leading opponents of Gen. Raphael Leonidas Trujillo's dictatorship.

"This book was amazing! "In the time of the Butterflies" is both a learning experience and a journey through the lives of the "Mirabal" sisters who had the courage and devotion to confront the awful Dominican dictator, Rafael Trujillo. He was a man who attained his position through violence and greed and who eliminated any person that opposed him or stood in his way. After these sisters discovered his true identity, they didn't stop the effort to overthrow him. Patria, Dede, Maria Teresa and Minerva were women who fought for what they believed was right and feared nothing. "Las Mariposas" or "The Butterflies" as they were called were beaten to death by Trujillos men, but it was definitely not the end of the battle but the spark that enlightened the country and lead to change. The Mirabal sisters teach us that there is hope for everything if you put your heart into it and work together. The love that they had for each other and their desire for change is very inspirational especially to women because it just goes to show you the power we have within ourselves. Risking our families, our friends and the people we love the most in this world is tough, but they did it. Hooray!"
"I thought this was a very interesting story. Everything sounded realistic, from the characters images, to the events that occurred. I like how one of the viewpoints of the story was told by a diary and the way one persons story connects to the other characters' stories. Like the way the youngest sister Maria Teresa was talking about how her sister Minerva was sneaking out of the school to meet with people who were against Trujillo. I just thought that was cool. I still have a couple of questions about the theme though. It seems as though Alvarez is sending the message that, those who choose to stand up and fight against what they know is wrong, will have a great chance of losing something in the end. In this case it was peoples lives that were lost. Minerva's friend Sinita lost her family who tried to fight against Trujillo. Dede also lost her family. It also seems like those who just stand back and watch or just say nothing are just as bad as those who are actually doing evil. At the end of the story Dede questions a man who said he witnessed the Maribal sisters being attacked. She wonders why he didn't help them. As bad as it sounds, Dede didn't help her sisters fight either so its a lot to think about."
"In the Time of the Butterflies has taught me about the importance of family and how it can serve as a stronghold for individuals. The Maribal sisters were all different from each other. Minerva at first proved strongest by arranging to create change in their society, by the end they all pulled together to help guide the nation. They helped because of their love for Minerva, to keep her safe, what the cause meant to each one of them, what it meant to their family, and for the importance of freedom in the nation from Trujillo's Presidency. Minerva, Dede, Patria, and Mate always cared for one another and made sure that they were always safe. Even their "Papa's other family" showed their loved for them when Margarita was able to send a note written by Mate from prison to Patria. Their strength, courage, leadership, risk, devotion, fear and selflessness, teaches us that any goal we have is worth reaching for, and even as ordinary people we are able to cause change. This book has taught me that even after not experiencing what it is like to have siblings or even an extended family growing up, now that my family is united, I can too find support within them no matter how far they may be. Family togetherness is our stronghold it is important for us to help overcome burdens, while helping each other we cope with life's troubles and have a better chance at acquiring peaceful and jubilant lives."
"Julia Alvarez's novel, In the Time of the Butterflies, is a fascinating journey through the lives of three sisters. This novel is a thrilling yet sad story of how these sisters end up where they are at the end of the story. Though the author chose to start the novel with the end of the story, I was still very interested in knowing how that outcome came to be. I felt more attached to Minerva Mirabal because she is really the first of the sisters to start realizing how corrupt General Trujillo really was. She fell in love with a member of a Communist Party who was very much against all of Trujillo's plans and ideas. Her love's life ended once Trujillo's men found out of his revolt against Trujillo. Trujillo would have anyone killed at a moments notice if he found out they were against him. This is a marvelous story of these sister's lives and how they help each other out when things got tough. The title very much fits the Mirabal sisters which are free thinkers just as butterflies are. I recommend this novel to anyone who likes to hear of adventure and isn't afraid to read about sad tragedies."
