"Having read a couple of her detective novels which I loved, and her first book which I also enjoyed I was so disappointed in this one that I did not even finish it. (Perhaps I am now too old to be reading about mixed up undergraduates as I now have a grand-daughter at university. My own experiences were that of a mature student.) None of the characters held my interest. Where the lecturer is quoted I have some difficulty in understanding his comments, though I might add that this was never my own experience. No wonder his students did not attend his lectures!"
"Okay I am in the same place with this as I am with Good Doctor Guillotine. I can't seem to decide if it is a fantastic book objectively or if I just really like it a lot. I know I gave it a different score. I feel the need to do this because I think that both books were 5's for me but that this book has a wider audience than Guillotine. Perhaps I'm wrong and I should equalize but I'm standing on that opinion.
This is a book about writers. So Nick Hornby would be on the fence. It is heavily postmodern. People seem to be reading each others thoughts. Stuff like "I wondered if my father was alive. 'possibly'" (not a direct quote).
The story gives it away, but part of the fun of the novel is that the two characters are making fun of each other for not getting it and being slow.
Nothing happens in the book, which becomes almost a metaplot.
On some level it is like reading house of leaves without the weird formatting."
"Too bad, kind of boring and all over the place. The way she chose to tell the story was a little odd. The first half of the book felt like it went nowhere. Too many characters. Too much jumping around. I kind of wanted to slap the narrator."
"I gave up on this one, after sticking it out far longer than it deserved -- only because I LOVED the two other books I'd read by her. Half way through I decided I was never going to warm up to it. Very po mo, British English department "in" jokes. Neither funny nor clever. And I own it!"
