"What an adorable book! Yes, Eloise is spoiled and it is very concerning that there is no parent around...ever, but it is just such a fun book. I saw a student reading the book and it caught my attention. I had never read any books in the series but had heard of it. I love the illustrations and how the text and illustrations are placed so nicely on the page to compliment each other. It is like no two pages are alike. It is also fun to see where Eloise will pop up in the illustration when she is around The Plaza. I also really like how in the illustrations when Eloise is playing pretend that the characters in her mind are red, outlined figures.
While I think it may be hard to get most boys to relate to Eloise, I think that this book could lead to a great writing activity in the primary grades. Students could write about being Eloise's friend and the adventures they would get into at The Plaza or they could write about what they would be like if they lived at a hotel."
"Mixed feelings about this one--Ella found parts uproariously funny. It's more of a read-aloud than a read-alone since there are no periods in the book, it uses French words in places, and imitates Nanny's British accent by writing "bawth" for bath. Be prepared to explain corsets and roller skate keys, room service and an interesting elevator map. I can see how it became a classic with an educated urban population a generation back, but parts struck me as pretentious and bratty, even while I chuckled at the humor."
"I knew of Eloise. The books and the movies. I'd seen snippets of one of the moviess. And what I saw was all right. Not something I'd want to watch all the time, that's for sure. Well, now I have read the book. And while there are many fans of Eloise in this world, I am sorry but I am not one of them. I can see why so many like her. But she's not for me. I think I could handle a typical 6-year old who has messy/bratty/spoiled tendencies, but part of me doesn't like the illustrations or how the story is told. I don't find her cute and funny. I want to right the wrong of her not having parents around and give her some proper discipline. She should have had it long before the books began. Poor Nanny. But at least the two really do love each other. I think I'll be fine if I do not read the other 3 Eloise books or see one of the movies all the way through (Julie Andrews or no)."
