"Obsession, neurosis, compulsion, irrationality, unreliable narrators... all things I usually love, but for some reason I couldn't really get into it here. Maybe because the main character didn't seem real for me. It seemed a bit exaggerated. Or maybe because Thomas Bernhard does it better, with more humor, and about more trivial subject matters. It also kind of reminded me of Knut Hamsun's Hunger, but Hunger was funnier, more random, even more irrational, etc. Still, there were definitely some good parts, some funny spots, and some interesting insights."
"The narrator, Juan Pablo Castel, is a painter who tells us the story of how he came to murder his lover, Maria Iribarne, the only person who truly understood his work. It is a story of intense narcissism as psychologically claustrophobic as its title suggests. I'm very grateful to the friend who gave me the book, and I did learn a lot of Spanish by reading it, but throughout my reading I felt the same distaste for the narrator that I remember feeling for Merseult, the narrator of Camus's L'Étranger--a pitiless distaste that leads to more depression than catharsis. I'd rather read a Browning monologue."
"How well can you rely upon a narrator who admits to a murder in the first line? This novel is an interesting explanation about why a murder had to take place from the killer's perspective. I think it might be difficult to find an English version, but it's great stuff."
