"The first time I tried to read this book I thought I would die, but I tried because it was in the reading list in my last secondary school year and a likely suspect for the equivalent to the Leaving Cert. I could read it but I was lucky, in some way, and it didn't appear the the exam. Slowwwwwwwwwwwwww, very slow. Horrendous pace unlike "Zalacain, El aventurero". Very philosophical, very existentialist and years later after reading "Crime and Punishment" very like that book, but in this case without the crime. "The Adventures of Shanti Andia" (Las Aventuras de Shanti Andia" is more like "Crime and Punishment" there's no crime exactly, but some kind of destiny or retribution for your sins in the story and that's another very slowwwwww book.
Aside from all that, the issues of the meaning of life are very interesting make it very worth reading. But it's really slow, it's not "Zalacain""
"so pio baroja is kind of a lesser known influence on hemmingway. his books that i've read go through the entire life of one character. in this book andres hurtado goes to school, becomes a small town doctor, gets married and then, then his wife dies giving birth at the very end (sorry if this spoils anything...it doesn't really, though). i was so surprised when i read this...the same ending as farewell to arms. very recommended...especially if you like hemmingway."
"they say this book is a classic. its about an unhappy and hapless doctor (a la madame bovary). it turned me into an misanthrope for a period of several weeks."
