Charles R. Forker offers a discussion of Marlowe's use of sources, and presents a new argument for the drama's ...

"Marlowe is a truly intriguing playwright, willing to jump into the most difficult topics and display them to the full. Edward II deals with homosexuality not as a disease, but as a pure love between individuals, but this is not the only merit of this challenging play."
"I remember reading EDWARD II in class while studying A-Level English Literature. We got a lot of out fun of it. I was playing Edward and a buddy of mine was Gaveston. We were 16 year olds so you can imagine the laughs we had.
Looking back, this was a strong, solid play and almost as good as the stuff Shakespeare was writing during the same period. The level of ultra violence is there as well as the telling of a genuine historical story. I only knew Edward as that guy in BRAVEHEART who got chucked outta the window so this was enlightening stuff."
"Edward II is the story of a king who failed utterly at prioritizing, and placed the value of his "favorite" (his lover) above the welfare of his kingdom. In doing this he lost respect from his advisors, wife and the few friends he had. His lovers were killed by his advisors in an attempt to reason with him, and eventually the king was killed as well. The play ends with the king's son, a very young boy, discovering his mother's role in his father's execution, and ordering her imprisonment as well as her lover's.
I really enjoyed Edward II. It is a compelling, dramatic look at leadership with the sometimes unclear cause-effect parallels that occur in modern government. The characters were easy to understand, as (in traditional Marlowe style)they all only ever had their best interests at heart. The actions of the characters were never entirely grounded, giving them a sort of drugged sense as though oblivious to their own actions.
Edward II was not a difficult play to follow, and was relatively easy to understand especially in the second act. The use of tragic irony and cynical characters give the play its well-wielded themes of betrayal and dishonesty."
