About this title: When Edie was first published a decade ago, it quickly became an international bestseller. In the sixties Edie Sedgwick exploded into the public eye like a comet--aristocratic, glamorous, and Andy Warhol's superstar. Then at 28 her light fizzled and died from a drug overdose. Alternately thrilling, tragic and horrifying, this book shatters many myths about the American sixties. Photographs.

"What I liked about this book is the way in which it was written: through a series of expertly edited accounts from people involved in Edie Sedgwick's life - both in her childhood and in the 1960's in New York City. Because the point of view is ever-changing, you're constantly introduced to new characters and tone. In addition to telling Edie's story, the book delivers a brutally honest account of the Sixties, which is all at once thrilling and sad."
"I can't explain why Edie's story fascinates me, she was the spoiled little rich girl who had her fifteen minutes of fame in the company of Andy Warhol, and she was discarded as soon as he was done with her...I've read it through at least twice, and have picked it up and read random points...and I shake my head and wonder why...sometimes the true stories are weirder than fiction..."
"Edie Sedgewick's life did not begin and end with her two/three years as a Factory It Girl. In addition to the usual descriptions of Factory Life, this book reveals where the socialite came from (West Coast society just as effed-up as the East Coast underground scene)and where she went (after her tumble out of the glittering Factory sky). Organized as a collection of interviews, the chapters book-ending her days in NYC are equally, if not more fascinating.
In its early chapters, Edie's surviving sisters and brothers describe the surreal and insular isolation of their California ranches and the bigger-than-life personality of their philandering father.
But I bought this book after thumbing through it because its later chapters went into detail about the filming of Ciao! Manhatten!. The movie (which is actually disparate footage from the late Sixties to the early Seventies, cobbled together and wrestled into a sort of narrative) blows my mind with every viewing, and I have to agree with the interviewees who posit that the film and Edie's character "Susan Superstar" function as sort of zeitgeist for the transition between both decades.
A totally absorbing book. Edie's desperation alternatively seeps and gushes from the memories of this book's speakers."
"Ok. I think Edie Sedgwick was kind of a stylish, tragic twit (though I shouldn't speak ill of the dead, I suppose). And the antics at the Factory, and that whole scene, I find depressing. What I liked about this book, and what drew me to it, is the concept of an oral biography. It's fantastic. You couldn't invent some of these voices and characters. So much potential as a form - perhaps the perfect biographical form, being necessarily partial, in both senses."
