About this title: Keynes's analysis of the economic effects of the Treaty of Versailles proved to be prescient. He represented the British treasury at the 1919 peace conference, but resigned in protest over the harsh reparations imposed on Germany by the victorious Allied countries. The book caused great controversy when first published, but subsequent events proved Keynes right. Keynes went on to become the 20th century's most influential economist..

"The Economic Consequences of the Peace is known to be a prophetic book predicting the peace negotiations after WWI would lead to further disaster, almost predicting WWII. John Maynard Keynes was part of the English delegation to the peace conference, giving him a first hand account of what went on. The book goes through the different personalities present at the conference, he was very critical of President Wilson inability to use the bargaining position to foster a peace that would be beneficial to all of Europe. He argues, like most negotiations, parties came to the table asking for everything fully expecting that they would have to give some up during the negotiation processes. The problem in this negotiation is that no one was there to represent Germany granting a lopsided treaty.
The Economic Consequences of the Peace is a great example of a well thought out policy analysis. Keynes' analysis included a history of European relations, the economic realities of pre and post war Europe, and most importantly to his analysis covered Germany's ability to pay post war reparations and the effects that it would have on their society.
This book is a must skim. I say skim because it relatively short but grueling to get through all of the details. My recommendation is to read the Introduction than the concluding chapter on remedies, then skim through the body."
"Really, really dry. If you already realize that the Treaty of Versailles was the primary cause of Germany's Great Depression, then you've got the point of the book. If you want to know some more details, like:
What did the terms of the actual treaty look like? What were the immediate and lingering effects of the treaty? What were the motives of the parties to the treaty? Why was Wilson such a useless pustule at the conference? Could some of Germany's early acts in WWII be a direct result of this treaty?
. . . then this book is for you.
I'll take a look at Keynes' General Theory and see if it is more useful."
