Her name is Carmine Greer, and she wants Jack to kill her rich, evil, abusive husband, Sloop. When Jack refuses to do the job, Carmine does it herself--or so she says. "Child/Reacher combo doesn't disappoint. The subject matter was a tougher read for me, but not because it's written badly - more likely, because it was written well. Probably the most impressive for this author so far, for me - I know the intertwining story lines are effective when I catch myself holding my breath and finding myself with tight jaws and generally stressed out while reading on the plane. Domestic violence and children in vulnerability prove to be sensitive subjects for me, so I'm in part relieved that I won't be likely to find this in the consequent books of the series."
"I have tried to like this series but it is so hard to believe what is going on. I read this book to give Child another chance but the plot is really thin and the story is out there. Overlooking all that, it was entertaining to read. That is why I gave it three stars. There are better books out there to read."
"This time, Jack's hitchhiking comes with a hitch. Carmen, the sexy woman who picks him up on a hot road in the scorched Texas desert near the small town of Echo, has an agenda that includes Jack killing her husband. Things heat up from there.
Jack's on his own in this one, far from "civilization," old friends, guns, and police back-up. This novel is slightly less violent than some of the others. More thinking and less head bashing. Another good Reacher read."
"Not good. I liked small portions of this book, but nothing more. I didn't like the Reacher character much ... the superman who can break multiple men into pieces when he isn't throughly dominating them mentally. I don't like lesbians inviting men over for platonic dinner with no bra in a tight white Tshirt. Huh? Some romance in this story could have helped.
So, I'm not a Lee Child fan, but my friend is and so I read one more Lee Child book, "The Hard Way." I did like that one better."
New York Times Book Review, 07/22/2001 "[Child's] words are spare, but well chosen; the action is violent, but well calculated; and the ingenuity of the plot is especially well suited to a character like Reacher..." -- Marilyn Stasio
Baltimore Sun, 06/03/2001 "It's sordid and complicated. It's also a tightly constructed and colorful story."
