About this title: Richard Yates's 1976 novel is considered one of his finest works. The story of two sisters and their thwarted lives, THE EASTER PARADE, like much of Yates's fiction, explores failure in all its aspects.

"First time I'd heard of him was when the movie of Revolutionary Road came out. That was plenty good but The Easter Parade by far, (IMO, of course), surpasses it. Depressing as hell, sure, but my God what characters. If you want to get inside the head of a fascinating person and watch them as they do their best from childhood to middle age and never quite seem to obtain what they are searching for-- this is it. This one has stayed in my mind for weeks after..."
"I won this book through Early Reviewers on LibraryThing but when I got it Revolutionary Road was just playing and I didn't think this book would be for me. After getting a push from the Early Reviewers I read the book. It is the story of two sisters starting in 1930 and progressing through their lives focusing mainly on Emily, the younger of the two. It was quite a depressing book, full of alcohol drinking, sexual experiences and people who are not happy. There is really little plot but Yates does have a crisp writing style that works. While Yates does get some things right about those times as a woman I felt he as a man missed some things about the heart of a woman. I never really liked either of the main characters and couldn't identify with them. The story really doesn't have any hope until the last two pages of the book and that was not soon enough for me."
"Well, I went on a Richard Yates mini-orgy after seeing Revolutionary Road, about which I had mixed feelings. The book was, probably not all that surprisingly, much much better. Then I moved on to Disturbing the Peace, Yates's spin on Gray Flannel Suit. I liked the first half a lot but toward the end it became too sad and predictable. Easter Parade may be my favorite of the three. About two sisters, he really gets into the mindset of a pre-feminist independent woman (and her traditional counterpart). Like all of Yates, this is not a happy tale, but a very realistic one. A fabulous counterpart to the Mad Men tv series, it is a great example of why the women's movement had to happen."
"I am really torn in deciding how to rate this book. Consistently while reading I was on the verge of making the same complaint that so many of my students had leveled at A Tree Grows in Brooklyn: "nothing happens in this book; it's just about the protagonist's life."
After finishing it, I still agree with that statement; in fact, A Tree Grows has significantly more "action" in it. Regardless, I couldn't put the book down. Yates' prose is anything but histrionic, yet it evokes such emotion. His tepid narration makes the scenes even more life-like, therefore more incisive. The characters are people that any reader is sure to know in his own life and relate to or sympathize with or impugn.
The end was a bit disappointing. Like life, it's unresolved and uncertain; however, there is something unsatisfying about that in a novel."
