"Rosemary Sutcliff's work had been recommended to me by several different sources. I am grateful to all for introducing me to this wonderful author. I hate that I have been missing out all these years.
The Eagle of the Ninth is historical fiction set in England during the Roman occupation. It is the story of a young Roman soldier stationed there whose career with the legions is brought to an abrupt end. Looking for a purpose to fulfill him afterwards he goes on a mission that takes him from southern England to the north of Scotland to find the Eagle lost by the missing legion his father commanded and discover the truth about what happened to them.
The language of the book is beautiful and it would make a great read aloud. The history is well researched, the characters fully developed and the plot engrossing. While this book technically falls into children/YA category it is equally engaging for adults to read."
At the age of eight, I read Eagle of the Ninth, my first encounter with historical fiction. I became hooked. Since then, I have been read Nigel Tranter, John Prebble, Conn Igguden, Simon Scarrow, Ruth Downie, and many others.
Forty-four years later, re-reading this classic is no less exciting for me. My view is that it should be compulsory reading in primary school as it really does bring Roman Britain to life. It is an exciting adventure that could possibly have been reality. It is certainly tinged with historic fact.
This book had an amazing positive effect on my life in that it gave me an enormous appetite for books, not just historical fiction. However, it did have a slightly negative effect on my life. I was always in trouble with my history teachers for doubting what they told me. After all, when they were teaching me current affairs, I was guided not to believe everything that the papers say. My challenge was always that the contemporary commentators, or historians, that they expected me to believe were no less than the journalists of their time. Why couldn't the historical fiction of which I was so fond be nearer to the truth than their history text books?
Eagle of the Ninth is a fantastic read. Whatever your age, if you haven't read this book already, read it now!"
"my favourite sutcliffe! or, at least, one of. :D I've always loved this book-- it's left me breathless with excitement no matter how many times I read it. Marcus, a young Roman officer, and Esca, his Briton body slave, set out in disguise to recover the lost Eaglel Standard of his father's lost Ninth legion from among the Painted People. The quest itself is not all the book. Marcus, as a character, is-- and he is one of my favourite Sutcliffe heroes. As in every sutcliffe I can remember, the beautiful scenery description makes one sigh with pleasure just reading it. Visiting the rural parts of Britain is on my wishlist, if that's the only influence Sutcliffe has had on me! Her ability to make a dead world and time alive-vividly so-- and a character-- has always been to me a benchmark of good writing."
"When I was younger, I read three books by Rosemary Sutcliff (translated into Dutch) and I loved all three of them. Since I generally want to read books in their original language now, if I can (English, French or German), I had been trying to find Sutcliff in English bookstores but couldn't find them. Apparently, she's out of print. So I was very happy to discover The Eagle of the Ninth in one of the many second-hand bookstores in London (where my boyfriend and I usually spend at least half a day every time we're there :-) ). I was also very happy to discover that I still liked this book, even now that I'm much older than when I read the previous ones. It did take a while for me to get into the story (Roman military life isn't one of my greatest interests), but after a while, it took an interesting turn and got really suspenseful (if that is a word :-) ). So back to London it is, to find a new old Sutcliff book!"
