"I'm behind in my reviews right now, but just finished Drums of Autumn this morning and didn't want to forget how it left me feeling.
Diana Gabaldon is such a wonderfully epic writer, but Dude. She SUCKS at endings. This one left me wanting SO MUCH MORE and I hate that. I realize it's a series, but (SPOILER ALERT), I spent the last 300 pages anxiously awaiting two things: 1) the (sex) scene where Roger and Brianna reconcile and 2) their wedding. The fact that she leads the reader into the bedroom with the couple and then stops the narration before any actual ACTION occurred REALLY BUGGED ME. I can admit that I'm probably a bigger fan of sex scenes than most readers, but this was a case in which the author lost out on the opportunity to deepen a character in a meaningful way. I wanted to know exactly how Roger touched Brianna - how did he maker her feel? was she able to get over her fear of intimacy after being raped? Etc, etc, ETC. It's my impression that the series will pick up with these two as the main hero/heroine, so I wanted MORE.
Also, I've said this before about other books, but I really hate the miscommunication plot device. Almost all of the dramatic tension in this novel is the result of characters not telling other characters what needed to be said. As a person who ALWAYS says what's on her mind, I HATE THIS.
All that said... I'm already reading the next book in the series. It's really, REALLY good."
"I think this is my favorite of the Outlander series so far (well, second to Outlander itself). This one did take a while for me to get into, however. The first few hundred pages were rather slow, but the last 400 or so were page-turners! Couldn't put it down!
Although Brianna and Roger's relationship wasn't immediately gripping for me, I did eventually like their relationship. I especially like Roger, who seems like a well-written and charming character. I loved hearing about their struggle for survival out in Fraser's Ridge. If you like hearing about some day-to-day activities, etc., you'll enjoy this book. There is, however, always something going on in these books. This is both a good thing (exciting - how could you have multiple 1000+ page books without it) and irritating (seriously, don't these people ever rest? It's exhausting!).
DG really is a master at what she does. She's an incredible researcher, really knows her stuff, and includes things about real history that are so vivid."
"The fourth book in the Outlander series has Jamie and Claire in America. Jamie and Claire struggle to find their place in this new world, spending time with Jamie's plantation owning Aunt Jocasta and also considering recruiting Jamie's old acquaintances and developing a homestead. The pair encounter many old friends, as usual, including John Grey, and find ways to make themselves at home in this new country. Meanwhile, Brianna and Roger, now in a relationship of sorts, research the past, trying to learn about Jamie and Claire. Brianna makes a decision that readers will have seen coming, and this decision ultimately changes life for both Roger and Brianna in ways they never would have predicted.
Fans of the previous books will enjoy this one, and it is nice to see Claire and Jamie building a life together instead of running for their lives together. The adventures in America are a big change from their past time in Europe, but the reappearance of various characters will satisfy those who miss the Highlands. As it takes place on an entirely different continent and also features Jamie and Claire in a new phase of their life together, this book can be enjoyed without having read the previous books, though familiarity with the past story will make this book more enjoyable."
"Diana Gabaldon, you are driving me crazy! What with your demanding plotlines and cliffhanger endings. Luckily, this one was not much of a cliffhanger. It could end here for me, although I'm sure I'll read the rest.
However, I'm tired of the tired old themes and familiar scenes. Instead of Jamie and Claire enduring endless hardships, it's been passed along to Roger and Brianna. I've seen it before. Granted, Gabaldon is good at what she does in creating tension and conflict, but it's nothing I haven't encountered in the previous three Outlander novels at this point. (*spoiler*) I really didn't like the Brianna and Roger going back in time bits. It appeared all to easy for them to just fit right in! Sure, Brianna wore pants and seemed to be a giantess, but there wasn't much in the way of adapting to 200 year old, long-gone culture. Didn't buy it.
The plotting/pacing in this one really drove me mad, too. In one turn of a page, two months could by, while entire sections of book could last just a matter of days. Aargh! It's time to read something else for a while..."
