About this title: Twenty years after his last drink, Peter Hamill looks back on his early life. Growing up during the depression and World War II, he learnt that drinking was an essential part of being a man. Only later did he discover its ability to destroy the important tools of clarity, consciousness and memory.

"The title of this book made me think it would be a memoir about overcoming alcoholism. It was, instead, a fairly engaging read about an accomplished writer who was born in 1935, a poor kid in New York. While his father was a drinker, and the author too had alcohol in his life, at page 185 (where I left off) it was still only a small part of the story. Despite the misleading title, Pete Hamill's story is fascinating in its illustration of growing up in the 50's including his interest in comic books and illustration, wartime Brooklyn, gangs, his coming-of-age story, and the breakout of the Korean war in 1950. My interest waned at page 185 though, and for this reason only 3 stars. Pete Hamill went on to become a noted reporter (New York Post)and author of many books, columns, and stories."
"This is a lot more than an addiction memoir. It's really the story of growing up in mid-20th Century Brooklyn (park slope actually.) He's a great writer."
"I had trouble finishing this book as I felt some of the details could have been omitted. I also had trouble staying focus as the plot seemed to go on longer than it needed to it some areas. Not a bad read, just okay."
