"As a huge Dessen fan I find it strange that I've never read Dreamland before or even knew it existed. I realised that although I've read many of her books over the years I've never actually looked up the other titles she writes. Stange.
Anyway, being a Dessen fan I know how the flow goes with her books. Something happens to girl, girl changes scene and learns a life lesson all for the best. I'd been told that Dreamland didn't do that and I was intrigued. Initially, I was dissapointed because it seemed as though Rogerson was just like any other male lead for Dessen, a little troubled but overall a good guy. I had hoped for more...
... and then I got it! There was more to the story and it started getting exciting!
I finished the book in just over a day. I stayed up late because I just did not want to put it down.
My only issue is the lack of background for Rogerson. What were the secrets he was hiding? What made him do the things he did?
I'd love to see a companion book from his perspective."
"Have you ever loved someone so much it hurt? Caitlin O'Karen can tell you all about it. Ever since she met Rogerson Biscoe, there was something compelling different, and something her sister, Cass, had never done. Cass ran away with her boy friend Adam, on Caitlin's sixteenth birthday, her mom was constantly worried about her doughter. Caitlin always felt as though she lived in her sister's shadow. So, for her Junior year of high school, and now that Cass was gone, she wanted to do everything she could to be different from Cass. She even joined the Cheer leading team with her best friend Rina. even she hated cheer leading ,Then, she met Rogerson. As I stated above, he was the kind of guy Cass had never dated just by looking at him. Rogerson had dreadlocks and big green eyes, and a BMW car. To Caitlin he knew everything, there wasn't one thing he didn't know. The only thing with Rogerson was, that his Dad hit him. Does the Apple fall that far from the tree? Probably not. I guess you have to read Dreamland By Sarah Dessen to find out if Rogerson is just like his father or not."
"I have been a huge Sarah Dessen fan for years, and this was the only book of hers I had not read. I had absolutely no interest in reading a book about a girl whose boyfriend draws her into a world of drugs and starts beating her. I had shelved it when I worked in the library enough times to know its basic plot. I also noticed that it certainly did seem to be checked out a lot.
I had been resolute in my decision for years. I loved my Dessen heroines Remy and Macy - who else did I really need? But then, a sequence of events was put into motion. Dessen had a new book coming out and a book tour stop in New England. I shanghaied my best friend into coming with me. She in turn felt like she should at least read some of Dessen's work. Pre-event she had only read That Summer and her world was not completely set afire. During the event, everyone kept talking about Scarlett from Someone Like You, which re-sparked BFF's interest in that book. The next thing you know, BFF is tearing through Dessen's backlist. Her next stop is Dreamland, and I felt like I should go there with her.
I picked up Dreamland yesterday at 6pm, and like Caitlin, I felt like I had fallen through the rabbit hole into her life. The book was so powerfuly written. During parts of it, I literally had my mouth hanging open. It was such an intense experience. This is definitely a book I will re-read at some point, and I am very much looking forward to my BFF reading it so we can discuss it. My only regret about this book is that I waited so long to read it."
"In this book Caitllyn's sister, Cass, disappeared and her family is falling apart. They try to get Cass back but she is with her boyfriend and is happier then she was with her family. Caitlyn joins the cheerleading team. She does it for her sister. She meets a kid named Rogerson Biscoe, and everything changes. She finds out he is a drug dealer but she still goes out with him. She gives up being with her friends for him cause he doesnt like when she is with them. Caitlyn has sex and starts doing drugs with Rogerson Biscoe and his friends. He begins beating her. She is afrade to leave him she knows its the right thing but she doesn't want to. Caitlyn hangs out with a friend one day and wanted to call rogerson so he wouldnt be mad. He doesn't answer and later beats her when she gets home. A neighbor calls the police and Rogerson gets arrested.
When reading this book i noticed a text to world connection. When Caitlyn gets beat she wants to get away from Rogerson. She still loves him and doesn't always want to leave him. When people get beat they feel bad and want to tell someone so they can get help or something. They are mostly afrade of telling someone because they don't want to get in trouble even though they didnt do anything. Caitlyn was in the same situation.
I give this book 5 stars. It kept me interested and had a good plot. It wasn't all "happy ending." I recommend this book to teens who feel pressured about drugs. Also to people who like a kind of depressing story line. If you like books by Sarah D. you should read this one."
