"I couldn't decide if I liked this book or not... But part of my dislike could've been due to the fact that I was plagued by visions of Tom Cruise as I tried to read it (despite the fact that I've only seen snippets of "Eyes Wide Shut"). I was semi-inspired to read this book after I read "Zeno", thinking that perhaps it would be fun to read something of the same era and set in Vienna... but there was something so cold and clinical about this book that I couldn't really enjoy it. The hero of the book is so utterly unlikeable -- arrogant, needy, and defensive. Much like Tom Cruise, I would imagine."

To hear such a genius refer so highly to a single work instills a deep desire to see for yourself. After finally landing a copy (without tossing too much from the old wallet), I completed the book in a near single sitting. Schnitzler's novella mesmerizes. He deftly tapped into the hidden desires and uncontrollable urges, thoughts and desires of us all.
