"This is the best book on drawing I have ever seen. It has examples of all the Great Masters, usually unseen sketches from modern masters, and contemporary artists. Some of the newer drawings blew me away. There is a picture of a work by the artist, Nancy Rubins, which measures 14'x24'x3'. The paper is one value completely drawn with pencil.
The book is also universal; there are examples from artists who are untrained to trained from around the world.
The book takes a theoretical analysis of different line values, studies in depth of both perspective and value from the Renaissance to the present. The book also integrates use of modern computer software and its emerging relationship to traditional drawing.
Each chapter has ingenious projects for developing and expanding an artist's vocabulary. At the end of the book are guides for using traditional and experimental mediums for drawing and a great glossary of terms. I had never heard of an ant's eye view, but consistently experimented with it. There is also a chapter devoted to different techniques for presenting and archiving your work.
Finally, this book has a strong bent on historical process and its importance for the development of drawing techniques. Each chapter has quotes from different artists:
Drawing is the true test of art.-Ingres Drawing is a verb.-Serra Two of the most valuable assets for an artist are a retentive memory and the ability to tap into the unconscious.-from the text"
"This is the book that I learned to draw out of and it has many pros and cons. It contains a lot of good images from the past hundred years in its chapters on gesture, shape/plane and volume, value, line, texture, color, thematic development, etc. It also covers why contemporary art is important and worth our time. This book is for higher learning/secondary students and goes more into the philosophy of these chapter headings instead of a step-by-step process of creation. I would have liked something easier to read, the language is just not appealing to me."
