About this title: M called this case a soft option. Bond can't quite agree. The tropical island is luxurious, and the seductive Honey Rider is beautiful - but they are both part of the empire of Dr No, whose mind is as cold and hard as his steel hands, and whose obsession is power.

"This will sound like a joke but Bond's mission here starts with an investigation of bird dung. Swear. Fleming mercifully forgoes the kind of tangent on this topic that sullied the earlier books. Doctor No himself is a very good villain, of mixed race which was a real obsession with Fleming. His scheme is a little elaborate but doesn't quite go over the top. Honey Ryder is a fascinating heroin because she practically lives in the wild and is self educated via encyclopedias. Despite being so primitive she's another surprisingly interesting woman in a Bond story. The last part of the book bogs down a bit and in torture and massive pain for Bond. And it's a slight comedown after From Russia With Love. But on the whole it's about on par with most of this series thus far. If you liked the others, then there is no reason you won't like this."
"It's not great literature, but did we really expect it to be? A fun summer read. I like to dip into the Bond books every so often. What I like is that they surprise me: Bond is much more flawed in the books than the movies. But on the other hand, they are chock full of stereotypes (sexist, racist) which I can overlook for a while but not for a string of books on end, so I never have a Bond book marathon. "What I learned" from Dr. No: Do not leave your opponent to be finished off by a giant squid. Sharks don't work either. Even with lasers on their heads. James Bond carried a Beretta (sp?) for years before the Walther PPK. James can drink like a fish (although no vodka martinis shaken-not-stirred) before any major spying operation involving tests of strength and endurance. It only takes 3 days to get in shape enough to canoe across open sea for a full night, even after a lengthy illness in which the subject is bedridden.
"This was my first real live James Bond novel. I read this on the bus to and from school. It had everything I had hoped for - sexy but innocent bond girl; dastardly villain with scary henchmen; wacky uses of technology; far-fetched plot; and of course the man himself. I enjoyed it, although I think I'll limit myself to one Bond a year."
Here's something I'll bet you didn't know--James Bod dies at the end of From Russia with Love. Fleming killed him off because Bond sales were bad and his publisher told him to start a new series.
Then President Kennedy list From Russia with Love among his ten favorite books in an article in Life Magazine. Next thing you know, Bond sales are up and Fleming has to invent a way to resuscitate his recently fallen spy.
So Bond dies of Fugu poisoning at the end of one novel and is kept alive by vigorous mouth-to-mouth by Mathis in the next.
And, to help him recooperate, he is sent to Jamaica on a nothing mission to find out what happened to a missing agent and his secretary. And then he runs headlong into the nefarious clutches of Doctor No.
The story is contrived. The humor is good... but come on, a Bond battling a giant squid with a two-foot spear he made out of a metal pipe!"
