"Loved it. Beyond the 1950s view of the future (rocket ships and Martians, no joke), this book is just an intense and funny view at what might make someone take up the mantle of a messiah... whether or not he wants to."
"Very enjoyable little read. It did have some annoyingly dated sexism, but as it was written more than 50 years ago, in 1956, I'll overlook it a bit. I was sad the Martians didn't have a bigger role in the second half of the book."
"This reminded me of the Stainless Steel Rat books. Also the movie Dave. The narrator is a star, in the sense of an actor, and a double for a politician. Heinlein did some things much better than other writers of his time. Even though it's just a silly adventure story, he manages to work in a lot of commentary on political life and he very cleverly makes the narrator's voice change over time as he begins to identify with the person he is playing. The big drawback of the story was the awful characterization of the only woman in the book. I imagined a different ending to the book. SPOILER ALERT The Martians are fooled by the actor, and adopt him into their tribe thinking he's the politician. And that's it-- he's gotten away with it. I think it might have been better if the Martians later turned out to have known exactly what was going on, but that in their culture, such a replacement was a perfectly sensible thing that happened all the time. They would have taken it as a gesture of respect. This would have been an exploration of alien ways of thinking, instead of just the white man pulling a fast one on the noble indigenes."
"This was a great little quick read -I am going through the chronological order of Hugo Award (sci-fi/fantasy) winners (more or less). For this book, the sci-fi is mostly just the setting -anyone could appreciate the story. Sometimes the advancements of science aren't what they're cracked up to be. I mean how can we imagine a nation of Martians given what we know today? Heinlein, writing in the 50s, did not have that problem. Another nice little point of this story is its emphasis on human and "non-human" rights (though it still has a taint of mild chauvinism in it)."
