"Extremely riveting mystery, where Wallander ends up behind the iron curtain just as the cold war is ending. Lots of guns, shooting, intrigue, and Wallander, a fellow from a much more permissive country,is just as puzzled by the strange inner workings as we are today, years later. It kind of turns Wallander into an action hero, which is very much out of character for him, but very gripping."
"Another good Wallander mystery. This one is much more international intrigue and espionage type, than local crime, and it just shows Kurt up as a man not suited to such endeavors. But, because he becomes emotionally invested in a woman, he is motivated to give it his best shot, which proves to be good enough.
Kurt is such a sad, lonely man. He brings out every feminine and maternal instinct I posess and makes me want to take care of him.
There was one detail that made the sequence of events seem out of place from the first book. He is still driving his dilapidated old Puegot, which it says he replaced with a Nissan in the first novel of the series. Maybe they are not intended to be chronological?"
"Iread this because I enjoyed the PBS Wallander films. But it was a disappointment. Writing flat and colorless, perhaps because of translation, perhaps to be in keeping with the landscape, physical and political, of 1991 Riga, Latvia. I lost all interest in the mystery and spent most of my time wondering why anyone wanted Wallander in Riga (ostensibly to help track down the murder of a major in the Latvian police, but all he ever did was watch other people do things, get driven around and then "write up his notes"). Characterization so thin that the big "bang" of the plot -- which of the 2 Latvian colonels is the bad guy?! -- meant nothing to me, as they were pretty indistinguishable. And.....

... Wallander gets it wrong. AND he is saved by a "deus ex machina" ending. So, again: why do we think he's a great detective? At best, he's just a lucky one!"
"Maybe 3-1/2 stars for me for the only reason of the subject matter. I was prepared to keep reading of the Sweden I love in the previous Wallander book, but this one takes place in Latvia. It also had a lot of political background that I was unfamiliar with, making it a little hard to follow for me. But I still love the melancholy, whiskey drinking, soooo human Wallander. And I loved the scene at the end as he described those chasing him as "dogs". Very well written in my opinion."
