"I needed confirmation that I am headed on the right career path. Do What You Are bases its career suggestions based on the Meyers-Briggs Personality Test. I'm an ISFJ - if that doesn't remind you of which one the Meyers Briggs test is, then google it.
I, personally, don't really buy the whole define-billions-of-people's-personalities-in-a-300-page-book phenomenon. But this book had been recommended to me by friends and bookstore customers so I took a gander.
So, once you categorize 4 major personality differences for yourself (i.e. Are you an introvert or an extravert? Do you gather information through observation or by researching?), you then are told how your particular personality assignation uses those four aspects together (i.e. which of the four traits is the dominant one?). Mine are, from most in control to least in control: Sensing, Feeling, Thinking, Intuition. From there it explains how as we mature, we incorporate a greater amount of the second, third and ultimately fourth factors of our personality.
For instance, I was a merchandising supervisor working mostly with things (Sensing- gathering visual information from customer behavior to identify hotspots in the store). Then I became a trainer where I had to show people how to do things (Feeling- communicating what I've learned to others in a way that makes sense to them). Then I became a manager and had to stare at sales histories and charts to use that info to sell more stuff (Thinking). And then, say, I become a Buyer where i would have to intuit what will be hot sellers in the future and order accordingly (Intuition).
Kinda cool...I can see how those four jobs would build upon each other in a symbiotic way. And I completely agree that thinking of future outcomes is not one of my strong suits. I would have to be very comfortable with what I was intuiting in order to intuit. So to speak. But its a gift I've always respected in other people and could see myself striving to be the one who has that job.
In the short career suggestion list for my personality type, they listed teacher, merchandiser, educational administrator, and massage therapist - all careers I have had or considered in the past. But what's even better about the book is it explicitly told me WHY those jobs fit me. I want structure, I want facts, I want to help people with my knowledge, I want to be in control of my work environment. Check check check and check. Holy cow! Yes! That makes complete sense.
I looked at other personality type blurbs; I always do with stuff like this because how do I know I'm not just interpreting what they say in order to hear what I want to hear like a horoscope? Nothing in the three other personality blurbs fit me at all - I mean, not at all. Data analyst? Politician? Accountant? No offense, but no thank you.
So I'm sold. I skimmed it and it actually helped me. And I only thought the word "hooey" reading it once or twice."
"I like personality quizzes, so this was a fun book for me. It goes really in depth with the personality classifications, but still gives sound career suggestions based on the findings."
"The perfect book for basic understanding of the Myers-Briggs test. I've been searching for a new career path and wanted to approach it from a new angle: understanding myself. This book gave some particularly helpful pointers about seeking out a new career through evaluating what a) makes you happy in a work situations b) describing and understanding your work strengths/weaknesses c) understanding what types of job work well for your type (in general) d) applying the former two points to a thorough evaluation of the latter. Two thumbs up for clarity!"
"I have sure had fun with this book. (I read the first edition). I used to give the personality type tests to groups. But alas, it hasn't helped me as much as I needed."
