About this title: Strassman's research connects DMT with the pineal gland, considered by Hindus to be the site of the seventh chakra and by Rene Descartes to be the seat of the soul. "DMT: The Spirit Molecule" makes the bold case that DMT, naturally released by the pineal gland, facilitates the soul's movement in and out of the body and is an integral part of the birth and death experiences.

"In the early 90s, Dr. Strassman took on the United States first official, government-approved research study on psychedelics in decades. He wrote this book to describe his goals and reasons for pursuing psychedelic research, the conclusions he came to, and the future, as he sees it, of this sort of research.
Strassman conducted a study over a series of months, in which he injected volunteers with varying doses of DMT. Light doses of the drug provided some interesting feelings among volunteers, but the higher doses gave extraordinary results. Through this research, Strassman encountered many similarities among the "visions" his volunteers were visited with, and was able to connect DMT, in many ways, to theories of alien abduction, as well as near death experience.
DMT, when injected, is a fairly powerful hallucinogen. South American shamans have been using a smokeable form of DMT for years in their spiritual practices. This same chemical is found naturally occurring in the human body. Strassman does not come to any "solid" conclusions with his work, and at times he describes his frustration with himself, the methods forced on him, and the somewhat confusing conclusions he does manage to come to. But by the end of the book, he remains certain that there is something special about DMT, and that it deserves and demands more research.
I'd recommend this book as a companion to "Supernatural," by Graham Hancock. Hancock's book is a little more fantastic, a little more speculative; Strassman's provides good technical info and detailed studies, which go some ways to backing up certain of Hancock's claims."
Medical professor and psychiatrist, Strassman, goes through a lot of trouble to legally experiment with dimethyltryptamine (DMT), aka ayahuasca, a psychedelic drug occurring in some plants and endogenous (naturally produced) in our own brain, currently a Schedule I (illegal) drug in the US, thanks to the paranoid wisdom of our Congress and the self-serving political machinations of R M Nixon, once known as a president. But I digress. Strassman finds (surprise) that DMT is not only harmless, but induces the kind of religious experience that the faithful vainly pray their whole lives for. What're ya gonna do?"
"No question about it, this book changed my life. The very fact that the human body produces N,N-DMT, one of the most powerful hallucinogens that the West is aware of, absolutely changed my perspectives about spirituality and religion. I had been aware of issues like temporal lobe epilepsy and other conditions that can produce visionary states, but the fact that every healthy human produces DMT (in varying quantities) completely complicated my atheistic worldview. No longer do I think of visionary/mystical reports as lies, but rather as neuro-biological functions to which nearly every human is in some sense capacity capable of. Who knows, it may even have some function in the fascinating science of dreaming.
I disagree with many of Strassman's speculations. However, he clearly states that they are indeed speculations rather than simply spouting fantastic fictions and attaching his degree as a badge of authority on the matter. This I feel is intellectually honest and deepens my respect of the man.
A powerful book. A landmark in reintroducing psychedelic studies. A fascinating step forward in understanding human consciousness.
"The author is clearly out of his mind--much like Terrence McKenna and almost every other DMT-hound on the planet. It's pretty clear that DMT deranges you...but it does so in such a FASCINATING way! And, hell...who am I to say that Strassman and McKenna weren't onto the something? They clearly were ON something, though--that's beyond questioning."
